It's weird, but I am currently completely in love with MR2's and am about to finish building my third Turbo in a the next two months, which should be running about 350bhp, with a Celica GT4 Chargecooler system, Eibach springs, TRD anti roll bars etc. so it should be a great drive.

But I can't stop thinking about what's next. I'm going to be 30 in 15 months and still don't own my own house or have any savings. I've always loved cars but in my pursuit of a fast car, I've often cast other things aside.

What I'm really saying, is that although part of me would like to move onto a MK3 MR2 and do a Celica 190bhp engine swap, or possibly a Toyota V6 conversion, another part of me is starting to want a car that I can buy and just drive, without wanting to constantly upgrade elements of it. Don't get me wrong, I'd still happily go for a remap, new springs and new anti roll bars if I thought it would improve a car, but I don't want to be fighting against old age and bits failing or dropping off every month.

With this in mind, I've decided that I should keep the current car at least 18 months due to the monumental effort and stress that have gone into building it, but after that it's time to move on.

I've been looking at a lot of cars recently that used to be quite expensive (to me), but have now drawn up a bit of a shortlist which I will no doubt obsess about for the next two years now.

I've noticed the following cars are all either creeping below £10k now or are well under that:

350Z
RX8 PZ
Audi S4 4.2 V8
E46 M3
S2000
Supra Twin Turbo (a bit of a childhood ambition)

As you can see, my preference is RWD, but the S4 snuck in because I remember being very impressed with it on Top Gear and really liking the looks.

Does anybody have any opinions? These are all much newer cars than my Rev 3 Turbo, aside from the Supra, so should hopefully be easy to live with. My current commute is only 6.5 miles each way, so fuel costs aren't a huge concern, although the reputed 17mpg of the RX8 does scare me! I've also read that the S4 isn't brilliant, which I don't suppose is surprising really.

What are people's opinions of these cars? All of them should be very realistically attainable when the time comes to change.

Overall I want an involving driver experience, with a car that I'll look forward to taking on runs through the Dales every now and then.....

Nope not at all. I've been in my first house for 30 days (and I'm 30) and in the next month will have to decide if I'm selling my M5 or not. Fuel is now so expensive that the costs of the mortgage, rediculous council tax and impending interest rises mean that if my partner and I sold our cars and bought cheapy Diesels, we would actually take 10 years off our mortgage.

Tough question with so much to choose from, but with another 2yrs no claims added and the wife not been so "new" at driving i'm thinking S4,mk1 Focus RS maybe although hoping that fuel prices drop a little!!!

We do 40k miles a year between the two of us, so can't help you. I'd say at this point in time that if you're balancing or concerned about fuel costs, mortgage costs etc you're over extended (or you will be in the foreseeable future)

Well I've got 5 years, so not too worried about insurance either, although the rate it's going up may make me revise that statement one day!

350Z. Fun, practical, reliable and quick. No need to spend lots on it and you can get your house/future sorted

Where is the "buy a house" option, because in all honesty you would be a complete fkwit to blow 10k on any of the above listedcars with no savings and no house behind you

Just my 2p, i had some reliatively nice metal when i was living at home, i still live at home, but i now own it and Mum has moved out, since then ive had lots of far nicer cars

Don't live at home, I rent with my OH. Buying a house is a little further down the line.

I think all the cars you have listed could be fun, bar the Audi which for me is more a wafter than a sportscar.

Suggest buying a house becomes priority, rather than splurging money on cars - especially with what you've already spent buying & modifying. Leave it until 'further down the line' ('further on' from 2 years in the future, in your words, so 4-5 years?) and you will be in the situation of probably buying when the market has rebounded, interest rates have risen, you'll be shafted.

Sounds like good advice.

I don't think the market will rebound in the same way it did after the last recession, but prices will definitely go up one way or another.

Keep what you've got, buy a house, then get your "dream" car. That's what I'm doing. Got the keys to my first house on Christmas Eve, buying an Elise next week...

Based on your actual question, I would rule out the RX8 & S4 purely down to smiles per MPG. The Supra is bullet proof and extremely fast although a bit long in the tooth now, the S2000 is a marmite car that depends on how you drive, the M3 is a great car but has the potential for bigger bills. The 350Z is one that I haven't owned but seems to be well received although a bit on the heavy side from the reports i've read.

What do YOU want from a car? £10k can buy a lot of car depending on what you want from it. A few others to throw in the mix would be M5, Corvette, Z4, Elise, Chim, Griff, Boxster etc

How do you use your car and what mileage to you expect to cover?

That's all very well but I can't save up a 20k deposit anytime soon. I'll get 3-4k when I get rid of the current car so will be halfway to the next one, plus whatever I save between now and then.

I do get what folk are saying though and appreciate the advice.

You probably would've done if you hadn't been spending all the cash on modifying cars wink

True, but if I'd known about the recession.... lol.

Just thought about the XKR too as I really love them, although I do prefer the new shape over the old one, but the old one is still a lovely car.

My neighbour used to own one if these and if you want an involving drive on a reasonable budget then look elsewhere as these can cost a bomb to run and there are a lot of better drivers cars out there in your budget with much more reasonable running costs. Apart from that they are nice cars wink
