xbox live question

In the MB household we have an xbox which we recently activated the live account. After the 1 month free trial had expired my son managed to get a years subscription from his GF for xmas, which he has activated and plays on line with no problems.
Now we have found an issue that my other son cannot access any on line friends.

Now my question is, is the years subscription for just one account ie my son's or is it for the actual xbox which has 3 users ? (both my sons & me)

The live account is only on the one gamertag you would need multiple subscriptions if you wanted to have more than one gamertag (name) on one xbox

Silver is free and should let him talk to his mates, but you need gold to play online. Get him a cheep code off ebay, or buy the family pack.
