Would Nick be an utter mentalist if he fitted two completely straight, unsilenced pipes to his downpipes on the S? How loud would it actually be? I've told him I think it's absurd but he's still got an evil glint in his eye....

Yes!

I have something in my back box and it's still blcensoreddy noisy! It would probably be OK if you didn't want to do any long journeys and if you enjoy setting car alarms off!

Ask Steve j, I think his is pretty much straight through.

Ahh right, well he is going to the Nurburgring in it in May, so maybe not the best of his ideas. He has a second hand stainless exhaust waiting to go on, but he's not sure if this will be any louder than the exhaust he had before? (obviously it won't rot like the old one!).

As for setting car alarms off....well, both he and I have joined that (highly amusing) club!

If your going to the ring make sure your exhaust doesn't exceed 95db, otherwise you may have a wasted journey. Although I've not been tested others have, I also believe they have a noise meter somewhere around the track.

See below for a bit more info.

http://nurburgring.org.uk/noise.html

If you are thinking of using bolt on silencers, I believe these have to be the inserts that fit inside the exhaust rather than the bolt on cans you can get from places like Merlin Motorsport. Might be worth checking this though?

Cheers

Maybe I'm in the (silent) majority with this wobble but I cannot see the point of having a loud exhaust just for the sake of being loud. On a long run such as to the Ring it isn't as much fun as a quick blast through your local town centre. Much better to get a good sounding exhaust. Loud doesn't always mean a good sound wink

censored it, am I sounding really old? cry

+1

Exactly, a nice "burble" at tick over, bit of a "growl" as you open up and a nice "rumble" as you criuse.

Wants to sound like a Sports car not an an old Granada with a hole in the exhaust that may impress a few 10 year old boys but will totally annoy everyone else (imho) thumbup

I currently have what I refer to as my "socially unacceptable exhaust" fitted (my stainless one is awaiting repair/modification). This is essentially straight through, to clarify it is a single box mild steel system that all the baffles collapsed on blocking the pipes, the top of the box was removed and eveything in there taken out before the top was welded back in place. It is great fun for the first week or so and then is just too loud leading to worries about being stopped by the BiB, although I haven't been yet. From memory at SCH IV 2006 I think it was measured at around 106/107dB. Whilst it wasn't the loudest V6 at the time, I believe Pauls was now belonging to moffspeed, it was in the top few. If he is planning to do any kind of track work with it, as stated before, these kind of levels will cause big problems and should be considered.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will pass it on. If the limit really is 95dB at the ring, Nick's car is going to struggle: it was 105dB at the BNG, WITH a large hole in the top of the exhaust (so not even all the sound was coming out of the actual pipe where they measure it!).....

yes to both.

The public's attention should be drawn to the audible soundtrack with the enquiring mind going "mmmm, whats that !" biggrin

rather than it sounding like an old 3 litre Capri with a blown exhaust and the public going whats that nasty noisenono

IMHO of course smile

I've heard my V8S sans exhaust, and its not exactly pretty hehe

I'm with you on that. I've seen (and heard) S-Series which are much louder than mine (and mine isn't quiet - 99.5 I think it was, at S Club a couple of years ago) but they don't sound "right", not to me.

For example, my Cerbera is MUCH louder than the S, but the sound the S makes is much better - more of a "song" than just a "noise" if you see what I mean.

Although admittedly, the Cerb is pretty addictive too... but in a different way.

I think it was from about a metre Graham, and at 6000rpm? Pascal won the competition though with 125.4dB (he has two sets of ends for his exhausts, one which is a 'silencer', and cuts it to 115dB, and one which is straight through and 125dB). It's a pity you didn't hear that thing when he revved it up on our drive....

Hi Alan, they look interesting, but look like they could break quite easily on a low slung S exhaust? And also, won't they reduce performance?

Hi,
I think they are supposed to increase performance by making it into a straight through exhaust, they are quite strong, the info I got says you have to put a blank on it for the mot.

I believe it should be done at two thirds max revs at half-metre (for trackdays)...as on this Vid I shot of PW's Racer.

My 400SE made 108db at 4,000rpm and 121 at 6,000rpm when similarly tested that day. Standard exhaust.
