The thought struck me the other day that of all the euro box makers, the one I'm most p'ed off with is Alfa Romeo. They have one of the coolest sounding names; they have an almost unparalleled racing pedigree; they still make (fairly) beautiful cars; their V6 engines (and even their 4 pots) sound great; even their interiors aint bad; so why the blazes do they have to make ALL their cars FWD??? Why cant they make one, just one, affordable RWD car to appease the man in the street???

yeah, I suppose the floorpan is the costly bit to develop, but still, MG can do it, so why not Alfa? Dunno about the 75, apart from the fact that imho it was a bit of minger.

In my experience, if you drive an Alfa enthusiastically you will soon be on first name terms with the mechanics at your nearest Alfa specialist !

They take a fair bit of looking after but it's definitely worth the hassle. However, I probably will give a different answer when (not if!) it next gives me grief. Current known problems include tracking that has recently shifted, a long-term suspension clunk that can't be found and is now getting worse and doing the valves is becoming more urgent as I'm now leaving a slightly bigger blue cloud after heavy engine braking.

Apparantly, Alfa will offer 4WD on certain models in the future.

Yep you're right. Quite an interesting layout - gearbox was mounted directly to the diff, at the rear of the chassis, in order to aid weight distribution.

As someone (might have been Enzo Ferrari actually) once said, "when you by an Alfa, you buy an engine and the rest of the car comes for free."

Recent gems with the V6, 4cyl 16V, and old 'boxer', flat 4cyl, following on from the old classics like the straight eights.

ISTR that the gearbox location you describe was a common feature of Alfas - certainly the Giuliettas were of such a configuration..

Mate of mine's dad had one.. went through 3 complete rear axle assemblies from scrappy's to find a 'box that didn't jump out of gear

For all but track use (and how many will see that?) probably not.

And with that badge, and the Alfa herritage (OK so they're Fiat now but so what?) they're still special.

My dad has a spider and is waiting for the new one to be released.

Initial press releases claimed it was going to be 'rear wheel drive'. So watch this space .....

Cheers

I must say that caning the arse off my GTV is quite good fun. It can be driven very fast through corners / roundabouts. I love inducing a little understeer - screetching tyres, lift off a little, opposite lock - boot it out. Very predictable and good fun.

Does anyone have any inside information regarding the new Spider? Timescales? Layout? pre-release artists impressions etc. I am tempted to trade our 2.0 for a 3.0 but on the other hand I think I should wait for the new model. Rich...

Hi as a Spider owner I`m too, interested in the next one.All I know is that it is due out in 2004.There was talk of the new Spider and GTV differing to a much greater degree than at present.Lots of rumours that the GTV will be a bigger car with styling cues borrowed from the Brera or Nuvola concept cars.Last news I saw was talk of a Spider with a retractable hardtop. For more join on this us on www.alfaowner.com or www.gtvv6.com

Ummm.... Saw that at the science museum a few weeks ago what an excallent pice of design eh, and inside it looked like it could almost have been a production car, very well detailed for a prototype. Rich... p.s. just taking a look at alfaowner.com

As a RWD Alfa owner I have to say that I don't think I would choose to buy a FWD model.

Did a track day at Mallory Park in it on Friday. Absolutely superb - despite the weather - in fact it's particularly good fun in the wet - not usually the case with FWD....
