Nooby XBox 360 questions
Discussion
Evening all,
My wife has kindly bought an XBox 360 from Game today (Forza package of course) and I will be getting it as a gift in a few weeks time. It cost about £200 and has about 250 Gb.
My questions are:
Q1) I am interested in online play which I believe you have to pay for - will my XBox have a free/trial subscription or should I just buy the ~£40 gold 12 months access for me to get online straight away?
Q2) Will this be the slim version that she has bought from Game @£200? Are they still selling the old Xbox along side the slim one? I don't like the sound of the old over-heating issues!
Q3) I need a HDMI cable - Do I really need the official Xbox one (£15) or can I get a generic one (£5)? Is there a certain specification I need?
Q4) I have also bought CoD Black Ops. Can you recommend any other games that I might like? I usually play older PC and PS2 games and have enjoyed Counter-Strike Source, Battlefield 2, GT4, Half Life 2, Quake3, etc. I am particularly keen to play games to maximise the potential of my 1080p HD TV.
Thanks

1) It'll come with an xbox live gold trial. I forget how long it is, they vary from 48 hours to 1 month. My wife has kindly bought an XBox 360 from Game today (Forza package of course) and I will be getting it as a gift in a few weeks time. It cost about £200 and has about 250 Gb.

2) Should be the glossy new one (which rawks btw)
3) You can use any HDMI cable. I forget what they come with but I just use a cheapy amazon one and it's spot on.
4) Modern Warfare 2 is awesome - similar to Black Ops (perhaps too similar, but it's awesome nonetheless), Forza 3, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are great zombie shooters - made by valve and very similar in feel to the likes of CS Source and Quake. Forza 3 is a great driving game, and Red Dead Redemption is worth a go too - it's very similar to Grand Theft Auto but set in the wild west.
TBH I'd just stick with Black Ops and go get yourself a bunch of trials / demos from the marketplace.
Excellent response - just what I was looking for!
I will check out the trials and Demos. Do you know if there are any games similar to Half-Life 2 on the XBox? i.e. a first person shooter with big maps and lots of puzzles to solve? I liked the variety of weapons, vehicles and opponents which kept me interested for a long time.
I am rather hoping that this latest generation of game will blow my previous experiences out of the water!

You could give portal a try, very addictive but not an FPS game but super addictive with lots of head scratching. There's also fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas which are massive and awesome and have huge landscapes to explore etc. I will check out the trials and Demos. When you set up your account/gamertag you will get to a point where it asks do you want to go gold or go silver. You want to click silver then confirm it, it will proceed to tell you that you qualify for a 1 month gold pass.
You can do this 3 times but not with the same account you have to make new accounts each time.
The 250gb forza bundle (if i am correct) is not the new slim one but will be the new jasper chip none the less.
If this is the case i would take it back and explain that it is the wrong one you wanted and get the new "whisper quiet" one at the same price. Forza is going really cheap these days so it wont be that much difference in price as a whole.

The package was advertised as a 'bundle' in Game but it was a box with the console in and a seperate game from the shelf.
How can I tell for sure if it is the slim/quiet one? What do I look for on the box? (Its wrapped, so I might need to unwrap it!)
ETA - Does this pic show a slim/silent Xbox?

You will end up with this with the box being white and FM3 all over it

Or this

On the box.
Just a little added info.
If you are interested in the new kinect (which is compatible with forza 4 released next year) then you can get the kinect + slim bundle for £300 which would save you £40 in the long run.
P.s i have kinect and it is alot of fun

Just to finish this off - last night I ordered a generic HDMI cable, 12 months Live membership and BF BC2 unlimited edition! The preview video looked amazing, especially as you could do stuff like blow holes through walls and use the hole as a snipers vantage point! If made my old BF2 game look a bit limited!
Highly recommend Battlefield as others have said
For brain out fun racing go for NFS Hot Pursuit, awesome fun and the online is awesome
Re Halflife 2, The Orange Box is available on 360 which has HF2, Portal and some other games included, you'd probably pick that up quite cheap now
I'd also highly recommend picking up Gears of War 1 and 2, if you haven't played them before it will be very worth it, should cost about £20 for the set and everyone will be creaming themselves about GoW 3 later in the year so that will get you up to speed nicely

Battlefield is brilliant, difficult to fly choppers.. I usually just sit around next to the chopper until someone jumps in who can fly them
Another quick question - Is it possible to download HD movies onto the XBox? I looked at the Video Market place and I can only either buy+download standard definition films or rent+stream HD films.
I've opened the XBox early and have been playing a lot of Black Ops!
Initial thoughts are:
Single player is quite glitchy - I once got pinned between a door and a wall when a character burst through it so I had to restart the level. I also got stuck in a totally black room with nothing but a way-point that I couldn't get to (6.8 meters away) regardless of jumping/crouching/shooting etc. I had to restart losing hours of play. Also in Zombie mode, I sometimes get a zombie dog ghost that just stands there during the dog attack. This has happened twice now.
The XBox graphics were really bad when I used the supplied scart lead. My HDMI cable arrived today and it it LOADS better! Why couldn't they just supply a HDMI cable in the box?
The Zombies mode is fun, but I can only play one map at the moment. What do I need to do to access the other maps?
