Basically, I currently drive a 1999 Ford Focus and a 1976 MGB GT. I get my first year of NCB in February, and am looking to get my hands on something to replace the Focus for general hack duties. I'm spending a lot of time on the motorway at the moment, and while the Ford is fine, it's not really a place you want to spend hours and hours in...it's just a bit...normal.

For a while I've been toying with the idea of an MX-5, but I'd then have two 2-seat sports cars, neither of which are any good at motorway slogs, so a few hundred insurance quotes later, it turns out that the MG ZT is ludicrously cheap to insure (£1500 for a 18 year old in a 2.5 V6, for example) and people who have actually driven them say that they're pretty good fun to drive. I'd prefer an Tourer, as I reckon fast estates are fantastic things!

So, I'd probably have about £2k tops to spend, and would be looking at either the 2.5V6 or the CDTi.

A good, or frankly ridiculous idea?

My favourite car produced by MGRover by a long way. Build quality doesn't seem bad either from what I have heard from people who own them. Good choice. I was also thinking about one last year before I decided to go to uni!

Go for it, imo the zt is one of the best looking motors you can get, the zt-t also. Fancy one my self but was put of by a bloke down from work where they bring in crashed cars, they ended up having a zt-t written off by the insurance because it needed a new rear bumper, tail light and tail gate.Couldn`t get the bits for love nor money. Would still consider one though, heart says it`s got to be a 260, head and wallet say it`s got to be a cdti.

I've actually been very tempted by a ZT myself today.

You get a huge amount of car for the money.

Never even been in one myself so it will be interesting to hear what people on here think.

Good to see an 18 year old with some taste! smilebiggrin

You should find most larger saloons are cheaper for you to insure as well

Go for it. Those ZT-T cars are really nice. They look great, rear wheel drive too.
I've fancied one ever since they came out years ago. Probably in that blue metallic colour.

Got a mate with one and he loves it. He had the Mustang engined 4.6 version before the 190. He reckons the 190 is loads better, says the only quick thing about the 4.6 compared to the 2.5 was the way the gas needle moved.

Only the V8 is RWD, the V6s are FWD.

I'd avoid the 1.8 K-series in something that heavy, but otherwise it's a good car.

ZT-T is still a very nice car front or rear wheel drive. It looked great and still does.

They did a very nice v6 saloon in 160 bhp at the end, saw one in metallic red recently, what a lovely car.

£1500 insurance at 18?!?

I may have to verify that when I have a chance, one may end up on mine next year if that's close! biggrin

Go for the CDTi, good consumption on motorway journeys plus its extremelly comfortable for long distances. BMW engine goes on for ever and no HG problems or timing belt worries. Fantastic car for the money. Spares ok although some body panels may be difficult to source. Insurance companies not known for their patience or willingness to search for things so ignore the bit about lack of body panels. If you go for a diesel with highish mileage, try for one that's had a new clutch, would appear to be a weak point. Mine needed one at approx 90k but you could use it as a bargaining point when looking.

took a zt-t 1.8 turbo to le mans , it was the support vehicle in our group. carried all the gear etc for the two guys in the noble m400.
we parked at the entrance to houx campsite ,sorting out passes etc, when up pulls a coach full of danish motorsport fans, much to our amusement they ignored the noble and started checking out the zt-t.
for that moment alone its worth buying.

Low to mid 20s commuting, high 20s on a long run. However considering what you save on the purchase price...

£1k =

this was my ZT-T

I loved itsmile

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0... Mustang power to V6 Twin Turbo

It went like stink
Drank like a fish
I never saw another V8 during 30,000 miles or ownership or since.

I guess owning 1 of only 25 made also helps.

Buy a good one and you will be more than pleased with yourself. These are great handling cars and suit fwd. On my third 75/ZT first a 2.5 auto connie 75 so smooth a great car. this was written off in a 100mph head on and the car played its part saving my life. followed by ZT CDTi loved this ran it to 175k before filling with petrol killing the engine. The car was a 114bhp superchipped with synergy sitting on top pushing out over 160bhp and 300ib/ft. Now running a V8 with the dreadnought conversion.

I'm picking mine up soon we've gone for the 1.8 t facelift. Such a difference between it and the current car, just hope the kids don't destroy the back seats too soon.

Don't brag too much about the insurance, don't want anyone chatching on!

My Uncle owns a ZT 1.8 Turbo, has it for about 3 years now, he says it is a great car and has never let him down, just done 110K miles as well.
