How many shots on a Camera 40MB built in memory?

My wife just bought a new Lumix DMC FS33 camera and is working through the instructions, which are baffling! So, there was no memory card cardincluded so for the time being we just have the 40MB of built in memory. It's saying that is full after taking just 7 pictures, surely that can't be right?

Sounds about right at about 6 or 7 Mb per pic

40mb is nothing nowadays. You need a 2GB+ SD Card.

You can get 40 shots at 1mb or 4 shots at 10mb, HTH

??? Anyway... now looking ion Panasonic's web site I can buy a 4GB card in either Class 4 or 6 or 8 or 10 etc. As 4GB in class 10 is more expensive than 4GB in class 4 so what is a "class" ???

Generally, the higher the class, the higher the write speed to the card, so you can more pics in a burst before the buffer fills up.

I would advise buying two smaller cards over one big one to safeguard against corrupted data.

Yeah should have thought of that... but being my first proper digital camera why should I know that it doesn't have enough memory built in??? Anyway, that's why I'm learning here...

Class 6 is what's recommended in for my Panny compact (mainly to allow reliable 720p HD movie recording) - I'd guess the FS33 would work best with same (i.e. Class 10 would be overkill!)

OOI where did you read that recomendation or how did you become aware of that? It's a entire new black-art to me!

Can't remember if it was in the manual or on internet discussions, but it seems a good rule of thumb - got a couple of Transcend and TDK class 6's that record fine, whereas I think my camera steps down the quality of video automatically on my lower class cards!
