Due to reasons I won't go into (yet fill me with a deep, but hidden rage deep inside me) our house periodically stinks of cigarette smoke.

Is there a sure fire way to get rid of the smell?

Any suggestion gratefully received!

Get one of those odour removing candles, like the "household odours" by Price's. Light this when whenver your other half invites whoever it is round to smoke in your house!

Simple answer, if she can't respect the rules of your house, then don't visit! I'm sure she wouldn't want you to visit her house and take a dump in the corner of the lounge, smoking is the same in my opinion.

But for this time, try Febreeze for curtains, sofas etc, neuralising candles and fresh air should do.

assume you have had relatives visit over xmas?, why let them smoke in your house?, if any one comes here and they smoke then i show them the front door and tell them to do it out there, why do i want a house that stinks and smells like a ash tray, your house your rules .

Absolutely this. How terribly disrespectful of you and your home, I'd be telling her to gtfo.

I'm a smoker, and I don't even smoke in my home.

Because quite simply in comparison to the kindness & generosity she has shown us in the past the smoking, no matter how unpleasant is something we have to put up with 3/4 time a year.

Do I wish it was different? Yes. Would I create a family 'incident' about it? No.

Blatently stolen from an American web site, but might help.

•Vinegar. A bowl of white vinegar, left out overnight, can do a surprisingly good job removing foul cigarette odor.
•Citrus. Some swear by citrus peels when they need to get rid of foul odors. Leave a liberal amount of citrus peels in your car or home for several days (until the peels are completely desiccated). When you remove them, you will also remove cigarette smell - or at least some of it.
•Baking soda - one of the tried-and-true methods of odor removal. Whether cleaning your carpet, smelly used couch or dingy car seats, baking soda is your friend. Sprinkle it over the smoke-infused area and let it sit for a few hours. Then whip out your trusty vacuum cleaner to suck up the soda, finishing the job.

I have found that the white vinegar and baking soda works well with cat pee so should help with smoke smell.

Have a baby and position it near here every time she comes around...?

Or, less extreme, install a smoke alarm above the chair where she sits and say the local fire brigade put it there.

Not tried one myself, but apparently these things work really well:

I have tried all of the solutions offered in the other post for getting fag smoke smell out of a car, and none of them work terribly well. Wet shampoo of all internal upholstery was the only thing which made any real impact.

An ozone generator would be my next step.

Start smoking yourself, you won't notice the smell after a while.

Quite. I have a few friends/family that smoke but none of them has ever lit up in my house, nor even asked. To light up in a non-smoker's house is just bloody thoughtless IMHO - if they're that desperate, they can waste money killing themselves outside.
