A female friend who lives in the sticks is fed up of getting stuck in her BMW 320D and wants a 4x4.

Yes I have told her about winter tyres !

She fancies a Range Rover Sport which I think is a bad idea partially due to the running costs but also the reliability. She wants the same luxury feel as the Rangie so an Outback or Forester isn't going to cut it.

What other options are there £10-25k

Cheers

Audi Allroad? Not exactly 'luxury' though to be fair.

My Wifes on her second Nissan Murano.
Bought the first one as a second (work horse)car for her but she liked it so much the new SLK she had became a garden ornament.
Sold both that Murano and SLK and bought her a brand new Murano .

Just driven to Germany and back in lots of snow and its such a great sure footed car.
A real pleasure to drive.

All the below would be used:

Range Rover (normal)
VW Touraeg
Porsche Cayenne
BMW X5

Thing is, all these high end 4x4's are going to cost a packet to run compared to something like a 320d, I doubt the RRS is significantly worse.

X5 3.0d would probaby not be much worse than a 320d

Probably not for run of the mill things like fuel, service consumables etc, but from anecdotal evidence from people who've had x5's and similar, numerous other things seem to go wrong and cost a lot to rectify. Both frequency and cost seem greater then on a normal car.

I wondering if there was a luxury 4wd estate, nicer than the Audi Allroad something like a XJ 4x4 estate (which doesn't exist)

What does she like in the RRS that she will need to find in the alternative?

For example:

Off Road capability, or will it be tarmac only?

Interior Spec.

Image - does she like not being let out at junctions. Chastised by everyone etc?

As the alternatives have much different capabilities and image etc.

RRS is not that bad on reliability, mpg is mid 20's, servicing and parts can be expensive.

Her budget would realistically only stretch to an 07 TDV6, which would be out of LR warranty.
So a LR warranty or aftermarket one would be a good idea.

Only sensible alternative I would suggest is a Toe Rag, but if you're looking for image it's quite different.
A D3 would fit in budget and HSE have high spec again out of warranty, more acceptable image for the holier than though brigade. But not perceived as 'Luxury' if someone wants an RRS.

P.S. I have an RRS so not critising it at all. But if you actually want an RRS with it's perceived CHAV image, she'll probably not want something sensible that is more accepted by the masses.

She has a few quid and no kids etc and feels like 'spoiling herself' after 3 yrs of the sensible BMW diesel.

4x4 she sees as essential and a decent hatch / estate is required for her business.

Whilst she can afford to run a RRS I suspect the actual costs haven't crossed her mind.

Good call actually, get her to try one of these. Very nice inside and not too bad to drive.

I agree with most of the above but do not rule out the Audi allroad on luxury. The interior can cut it with any of the above, in the right spec and colour the car looks pretty awesome.

Have to say my money would be on the XC90 D5.

I'd be inclined to look at the Discovery 3. Plenty within that budget and the later ones seem to have most of the gremlins which plagued the earlier models worked out.

Good image, nice interior, masses of space, huge capability and not too expensive to run with the TDV6.

I'm led to believe no X5 is cheap to run, regarding consumables even the tyres will cost a bomb more.

I think the new Land Cruisers look fantastic, I would consider one in lieu of a RR or RRS.
In which dimension?

Lincoln Navigator? I rented one in the US last week, and it had more toys than Hamleys.

Cadillac Escalade would push the right buttons as well.
