A woman has died after being attacked by a dog at a property in south London, police have said.
The victim, in her 40s, suffered "multiple injuries" during the attack on Thursday evening in Wallington.
Police were called by somebody else in the house and arrived at 2057 GMT to find the woman still grappling with the Belgian Mastiff.
Armed officers shot the dog dead and paramedics treated the victim, but she died an hour later.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have yet to be informed.
One other person was in the property at the time of the attack but was not injured

Makes me wonder if there will ever be a way of stopping this sort of thing from happening. Even if the government was to bring in effective anti-nasty-dog legislation there is no way it could be enforced.
The only way to stop it from happening is a 100% ban on all dogs. All dogs have the potential to injure a human.Cue the dog haters.
Ban feckwits not dogs

There is. But it'll never happen in this country. Not being a dog person, I struggle to see why people insist on keeping dogs like this (i.e. ones that can very easily overpower a grown human, let alone a child, if they turn for whatever reason).
Not so sure why it's the main TV news with outside broadcast units and a reporter for each network, the lead for at least five or ten minutes four times an hour? Might be worth a mention on the tickertape banner at the bottom of the screen, and maybe a forty second comment well into the news? But the main feature?

Small dogs tend to be angry snappy aggressive little s
ts where as the mastiff breeds if trained and well cared for are far gentler animals. We have two italian mastiffs and while they are very powerful they are quite gentle in nature.

This is blue who is probably of a similar build to the guilty dog.
But one thing to note is the Belgian mastiff is rare breed so quite likely to be inbreed leading to a posibility of the dog being a bit mental

Seems 'the way' these days.I was in Gatwick on Mon evening. The Sky screens told people the airport was shutting before the airport tannoy...
As for the dog attack, there's probably more to it, but agree that all dogs have the capacity to injure. I own two dogs - I'm a dog person - but can't say I'm 100% happy with current ownership controls. Both our dogs are rescue - biggish cross-breeds, clearly abandoned and/or mistreated by the underclass, prior to being rescued by charities - and the sheer numbers of these dogs turning up in the system is testimony to the level of failure to control ownership IMHO.

Wallington - let me guess it's some chav hell-hole round Sutton with people who like sporting big dogs - like a badge of chavness that occasionally backfires on the owner.

I'd just like to understand why people keep an animal such as this.
A horse - people keep to ride I believe. I would assume the majority of injuries/deaths attributable to a horse happen to the owner? Maybe it's the same with dogs like these. Horses, to my mind, are quite different however in that they are not kept in a "general public" context. i.e. in massive urban concentration. And are extremely easy to avoid.
A car - you're being typically (of people who make such arguments) OTT on that one. Cars are inanimate objects. They are only dangerous when people get into them and start to operate them (and for the record, anyone causing death whilst operating a car should, IMO, be locked up and the key thrown away).
Big dogs like this?
Like I said, I'm not a dog person so I don't really understand it. Mate of mine has a mastiff. It's an impressive animal in terms of its size, mass, power etc. Hell, it's even very friendly and I've never had an issue with it. But it's not a pretty animal particularly. It smells (quite bad). They cost a fortune to run. They don't have massive longevity (due to the way they have been bred for power and mass). And if it wanted to rip my arm off I'd pretty much have to let it. Where's the attraction? I've asked my mate - he loves the thing as a "friend", though I think the ultimate attraction was down to the power of the animal - it's telling that he's very nervous about opinions from other quarters. I also think the "guard dog" angle came into it - ie part of its purpose is that it's frightening.

I think we should bring back the dog license systemGet found with a dog without a license then you are taken and put down.

Dogs aren't 'likely' to deliberately attack people either.
A horse is a lovable animal. Get on the wrong side of one and inadvertently they can lash out and kick etc.
My point is that many things are capable of overpowering People, going round with a banning hammer is immature.
In fact I would say the biggest culprit is 'People' themselves - how often are people attacked by People versus attacked by dogs.
Original statement is stupid one. That is all.
