I tried to get a mirror for my Z28 and they said I had to have the whole mirror. If that's the case, get a template of the mirror made from a piece of card and go to Halfords and find a suitable mirror (which will have to be the opposite side to the one that's broken or you end up with a driver's side mirror as the passenger mirror with the magnifying image on the wrong side if you see what I mean, being lhd).

Anyway, find a mirror that is bigger than the template and they'll cut it to shape for £20 I believe.

The rear view interior mirror and driver's outside mirror automatically reduce the amount of light they reflect at night to avoid dazzling the driver (electrochromic mirrors). Whether ordinary glass will still work I have no idea. What does Mr Reed think??

If you're talking about the blue-tinted stuff, they do similar mirrors in Halfords and I found one for my Z28 which matched the tint on the other mirror (although I've never actually got round to doing it as I'm nervous about taking off the existing glass repaired in a similar manner but with the wrong side glass).

B3any,

You could try GM Parts Direct to see if you can get just the mirror glass. If you have the dimming type, straight mirror glass wont work. You'll lose the dimming function.

If you have problems getting it shipped to UK I'm in Vegas and could probably help

Sounds like a lot of money to me. I was quoted something like £150 for a mirror assembly for the non-dimming Z28 but they are Euro-assembly mirrors so they probably held a referendum first.

Just been looking around my C5 again, and have noticed a scratch on the Right (passenger side) Wing Mirror in the paint on the mirror housing. Its is quite deep so I don't think scratch remover works.

Is there touch up paint, replacement part or something? I had a look at GM Parts but they seem not to do mirrors.

There was this part
www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~CookieSession~1~cadefibc~1280~1024~1~1930NAAM4

PART: 515010R
RIGHT OUTSIDE MIRROR, WITH CONVIENCE PACKAGE (PAINT TO MATCH) for $195...

Anyone else had to replace/refinish the mirrors?

Suggest you go the mirror route. Some clown in a truck with a sodding bar sticking out at right angles clipped my offside mirror and I had to replace it - trashed the housing. The bill with painting and fitting and VAT was £400+

As Mr. Reed is overseas, I will answer this one.

No ordinary glass won't work as the glass is electrochromatic, i.e. you pass a current thru it and it changes colour. The rear and driver side mirrors work off of the button in the middle of the rear view mirror and you will notice that the lights of other cars reflected in the mirrors have a much more blue/green tint to them. Why they don't do the same for the passenger mirror as well I have no idea.

If the passenger side mirror glass is broken/scratched then obviously it will be ordinary glass not the electrochromatic stuff.

I wish they made the passenger's side mirror electrochromic too, I expect some GM corporate accountant made the decision on that feature as being too expensive though. Let's just hope the engineers were able to slip a few more horsepower in behind his back while the decision was being made though !

My thought is that ordinary mirror glass would work on either side, but if you use ordinary stuff in the driver's side you will lose the night tinting facility. Depends on your cost priorities and driving habits in the car. The wrong side of £400 would certainly make me think carefully at whether I really use the electrochromic feature enough to justify it - and mine's a daily driver summer and winter.

Cool, where would one source a piece of glass for it?

There should be at least one glass dealer in your town who could supply some mirror glass and cut a piece to shape. Make sure its reasonable quality stuff so that it doesn't corrode or go bubbly. A bit of bathroom sealant or some other mastic around the edge of the cut piece might be a good idea to keep the moisture out before placing it in situ. I think you can get the sealant in black as well as white and clear nowadays. I haven't had to do this on the 'vette yet but it worked well on my old R5 GT Turbo many years ago.
