Peugeot Pushes For New Electric Records

Three helpers give Han Han a hand to... Oh never mind!

Peugeot's all electric EX1 Concept car has already set several records in France and is now setting more in China, we've just been told. And in spite of the picture the company sent us to accompany the news, one isn't the record for the fastest three-man push to the nearest plug socket...

Nope, driven by China's most popular youth blogger, Han Han, the EX1 has smashed the previous 1/8 mile and ¼ mile records set in September, with times of 7.08.62 and 12.67.54 seconds respectively.

The EX1's previous record breaking driver, Nicolas Vanier, was also in China and he achieved another unofficial record for 0 to 100 km/h, in 3.49 seconds.

Do we care? Not sure really, but wouldn't the Peugeot EX1 look fantastic with a proper engine tucked between its driver and the back axle?

I wonder how drivers of electric cars are getting on in the recent cold snap. Using the batteries for heating the car is obviously going to reduce range; I have read that this can be up to 40%. Also cold affect batteries to make them less efficient so I wonder what the max range of an electric car is in the cold weather, anyone know?

As to the Peugeot, looks like it's very much stripped down. As the article said with a nice little petrol engine in the back you could be really fast as well as being able to drive to the south of France to enjoy the open top motoring. Bit cold for here in England at the moment!

Of course the only reason you don't use electricity to heat petrol powered cars, is that internal combustion engines are so rubbish at turning chemical energy into motion. hehe

I know lead acids are rubbish in the cold, but I didn't think it affected modern dry-cells much?

It's nice to see companies still trying to push the boundaries of what electric cars can do, although I can't help but feel that performance shouldn't really be their primary focus until they can sort out the range and/or charging times.

It would be nice if Peugeot used that kind of styling on a Toyota FT-86 style car, sadly we are going to be subjected to front wheel drive from them for the rest of eternity I assume.

I agree.

still, the "thing" in the pictures above makes me retch with the front axle much wider than the rear one.

They were going to do a lap of the Ring in it but realised it wouldn't make it all the way round without a 2 hour charge up! wink

So the designer of that car started at the front, got halfway along the doors and then just gave up? smile

Pretty rapid, and a great looking car. Would be even better with a proper engine to go with it. Come on Peugeot, live a little.

Seems to me they tried it with this one, but stopped after the bonnet...

(then again, do have to admit that the RCZ does have some road presence... Sadly, as one of the Peugeot guys said "it's still a Peugeot"

Speaking to a guy the other day who is designing the charging and battery management systems for a certain large automotive company I asked him what the range would be in the weather we get at the minute. His answer was a rather sheepish "not very good".

Batteries (yes even modern ones) have trouble getting the power out at cold temperatures and problems with capacity at high temperatures. They have to heat them and cool them to keep them in the optimum zone. So if you're not at that optimum temp your range will be less, potentially significantly so in weather like we've had recently.

I think the seconds bit is an error, it might be a date rather than time... wink

lots of people seem to think that electric cars are not gonna happen - they are jokes - they do have lots of draw backs and i'm one of the people that hate them - but manufacturers have no choice they will be made and will be mainstream and theres not much you or i can do to stop it - even if people dont buy them for whatever the reason they will be altered or improved. they are coming. just look at what nissan is doing with the leaf. just look at the amount of investment that is going into it - they wont spend that kind of money and write it off easily. just look at what the government is pumping into the recharge infrastructure.. they are committed to making it happen - much to my dismay... still think hydrogen is a better way tho (if it could have problems sorted out)

I think that Peugeot must push out these two prototypes out every time they need some column inches. I'm sure they used a pair of these FWD narrow rear track cars to launch the 206 style nose.

I'm bored of these two cars, the red one will be along in a minute

Why do you hate them?

Are you one of these strange folk that belive that the second that electric cars go on sale all petrol cars will be scrapped the following day.

I interpreted it as 12.6754 seconds although I could be wrong. As for the date suggestion, I really hope you're kidding. laughwink

So precisely which records has it "smashed"?

If you want to see a fast 1/4 mile from an electric car, check out: http://www.streetfire.net/video/worlds-quickest-el...

How does 7.63/160.63mph grab you?
