Question about sports exhaust system.
Discussion
I have recently had a sport exhaust system fitted to my A4 1.8T.
I opted for the 'quieter' option, but 4 days later and the noise is driving me insane...!
I took the car back, and was told the solution would be to baffle it, which would restrict it.
However, I note that this system has no resonator, there is just a single silencer at the rear.
The person I took the car to tells me that fitting a resonator won't cure the problem (excessive boom inside).
However, many moons ago when I had access to welding equipment, I fiddled around quite a bit with various systems on various cars (all 4 cylinder) and I generally found that the resonator (or center silencer if you like) was the most important component of the entire system.
For example, it was possible with many Jap cars, to simply fit a 'cherry bomb' at the rear, which would improve power output ever so slightly.
So I feel that they may be wrong to say that fitting a resonator won't tone it down a little.
Any experts out there?
Obligatory pic of Cherry Bomb for those not familiar.

Genuine question, if you wanted a quiet exhaust, what was wrong with the original?
Virtually all sports exhausts (even the so called quieter ones) I've heard have been considerably louder than a standard one!

The original was rotten through, and had broken off.Virtually all sports exhausts (even the so called quieter ones) I've heard have been considerably louder than a standard one!

No aftermarket system available (dealer only) and it was £600 + from dealer..
£345 for a custom system.

Did you pay £345 for a hand built cherry bomb? Also, you don't seem to want a loud exhaust, and yet you had an unsilenced straight pipe installed, are you mad?
Noooo!!!It is a straight pipe yes - but not a cherry bomb on the end - there is a large silencer on the end.
I included the pic of the cherry bomb as part of the rest of my 'story'...
ETA: Pic of silencer.
It is indeed a 'Longlife' as pointed out by the poster below:

You should have gone for one of Jetex's 3 box systems if you want a performance exhaust that is almost undetectable at low revs yet provides a excellent throaty sound once you start winding up the revs.
In my experience of "custom" exhausts eg longlife, they tend to use only one silencer prior to the back box and their back boxes are some of the worst sounding ones in existance.
OP you are correct that a resonator after the cat is crucial, then at least one silencer before the back box would help but is not strictly essential.

Seems like you bought a single box system. Presumably you saw the system on the car before you handed over the cash?
Is the catalytic converter in the single box?
With a single box, you are likely to fail your emissions for the MOT aren't you?
Seems like you will just have to stump up for another box to me.

Yes but I didn't test drive it before handing over the cash.alolympic said:

The original cat is still in place, at the front. So MOT will be ok.With a single box, you are likely to fail your emissions for the MOT aren't you?

Which is precisely what I was expecting...I had a custom exhaust made for my 1.2 corsa, and it sound amazing! for about 10 mins then on the motorway was a bit annoying so went back and they wacked on a centre silencer and it is much better.

after centre silencer, in car but you get the idea of the diffrence

The resonator would take out the frequencies that make a system drone. Somewhere between 1.5-2K seems to be the area that causes the problem in the cabin.
This is exactly what I thought!!But the person who did the job claims it wouldn't help.
