It's Begun - FCC Passes Rules to Regulate Internet
Discussion
The FCC have decided to pass rules implementing internet regulations. They claim this will make it more fair and equal; those opposing claim the internet is not broken, so let's not try to fix it. I do know this, the FCC, like any bureaucracy, must keep growing to keep existing. I am interested in hearing PH opinions on what this may mean.

Actually, the way it looks to be phrased, quite a good thing. The law actually bans fixed line broadband providers from "Traffic Shaping", and wouldn't it be nice if we had that here. It allows mobile providers to do it, which given the scalability issues you can get with mobile, quite a sensible way round to do it. And if they are doing it, they have to disclose exactly what's being throttled.
Note that we haven't seen a huge hoo-hah from activists about it. It's not a big thing at this point.

I am worried due to the fact that government involvement, well intended or not, usually leads to more and more control and inevitable taxing to fund said control. Another thing, if we do that successfully here, it is a matter of a short time before your government adopts the model IMO.Note that we haven't seen a huge hoo-hah from activists about it. Pretty much this - they seem to be trying to fix a problem that isn't there and might never be just to justify greater government interference. Looks like O'Bummers resigned to a one term Presidency and is trying to do "everything he can". I was hoping that he would be the voice of reason after the madness of the Bush years, but instead he seems hell bent on destroying America. Just like a Brown Blair...
You also made the comment about the UK being next - we're already consulting on de facto blocking internet porn.

With the Repubs in charge of the purse (House), there are going to be a LOT of agencies that find they have no funding if they try to exceed their authority. The FCC is on top of the list. As is DHS for big sister's recent push to set up a climate change subdivision within the Coast Guard even though she can't seem to secure the border. Horrible sensible shoe'd woman.
I say cut all their funding by 75% and then only offer increases to those agencies that show tangible results against real problems, not made up fanatasies.

Right, I saw that the GOP is just going to not fund the crazy shyte that gets floated. The DHS man-lady that wants the climate crap is the same one that yesterday said there were 364 days in the year. Senator Demint is going to take on the FCC beginning next year...

This isn't a concern. What's a concern is that the USA is still refusing to give up control of ICANN. Get upset about that instead.
Nope, and I never will. The US has been a pretty good overall governor of the internet to date. ICANN does not need to be under UN control, or any other international body, when countries like Iran and China will have a say.US does do some odd things (eg dns should have been the other (correct) way round), and the State Department hates the idea of .xxx for some reason....

I'm sure they have. I can't recall, who put them in charge again?
Seriously chap, you don't know the answer to that question?
