Have a look on www.talkaudio.co.uk, there's a few people with Mini's on there and these people know their stuff 
The only thing you want behind you is the sub, in an enclosure.
Any full range speakers behind your back will absolutely ruin the sound stage.
You want some exceptional (see Focal) components, perhaps 5.5" mounted underneath the lower dash rail in pods.
This will ensure that the stage stays just about where the ashtray is which is where you want it.

in my min i've got a reasonable install. a mid under each side of the dash, a tweeter on top of each side of the dash, a cross-over for those two(i think!), two mids on the back shelf and a kenwood cd head unit.
not the biggest install, but it doesn't take up space and sounds loud but clear !

Do what I do - rip out all of the radio/audio gear, pull out all of the soundproofing, get the car as light as possible and get the 'pedal-to-the-metal'!!!

My mini had 2 8” 3 way Pioneers on the rear shelf, a 12” sub mounted on the rear seat firing into the cabin, and then 6.5” speakers mounted in the door builds. Was very nice sound form the Pioneers, the full range speakers were powered by a 4 way 600w amp and the sub was powered by a MTX 325w amp.
I’d used the rear shelf for the 6x9’s as you’ll get a much deeper bass as the boot acts as a nice box, I’d personally go for the 8” Pioneer TSE-2095’s on the rear shelf instead of the 6x9’s.

Now sorted...It's MOT time, and the audio stuff had to go, it weighed a ruddy ton, so should improve power to weight no end...
Looking forward to having the weber on soon.

i have a modded mini with some ice in it. basically you can put what you like in the back. I have two 8" subs on the rear parcl shelf two 10" subs on the back seat two 6*9's under the seat all run by two 600watt amps and a powercap all in the back so there really is no limit.
The only limit is to the acceleration!
