A council local to me has annoucnced these cuts for employees. Ignoring the fact its public sector etc I wonder if you were faced with said cuts if you would start looking for another job. I know some on here feel lucky to have a job whereas others feel confident in their abilities and will leave if they don't get an annual pay rise!

- reduce pay of all staff by an average of 5.4% (working hours cut)
- no pay increments for all employees for two years (2011/12 and 2012/13);
- no expected cost of living pay award for two years in line with whatever is agreed nationally
- measures to reduce sickness absence in the workplace (only the first 3 days paid I think)
- restructure essential and contractual car user entitlements + remove lease scheme
- payment of mileage rates at the government approved rate
- removal of all market supplements;

These kind of measures tend to be a very good way of finding out who your best and worst staff are.

Sadly it also tends to result in said best and worst staff ending up in exactly the opposite place to where you want each of those sets.

My last work were going through mass redundancies last year, we proposed a pay cut to save all the jobs. This was rejected by management.
When faced with a choice between pay cut and job loss what would you choose?

5.4% is fk all compared to what the private sector has seen! I doubt many are feeling that confident right now. I'd tell them to lump it or fk off.

I think you have to look at all the options. If your sector is in a dire state and there are hundreds of similar people looking for the same work then I'd happily take all of that on the chin and keep my head down.

However my industry has been pretty buoyant over the last few years (it lags behind everyone else by a few years) so I left my last job (which was secure, paid bonuses and pay rises) because they were tight and didn't want to give me the bonus I felt I deserved. If my industry was on it's knees then I wouldn't dare be so bold and would accept all of the points you've highlighted. Fotunately it's not so at the moment I wouldn't.

Which is irrelevant and wasn't the question.

What, exactly, are "market supplements"?

The private sector has been through a lot worse already, paycuts double or triple what they were suggesting.

The rest of those options would have been welcomed.

Throw out your dead, throw out your dead.

All look reasonable to me. If anyone in the council thinks they are worth more, then let them seek employment elsewhere.

I think its when the job they are offering only offers pay of say 20,000 according to their own internal scales but the private sector offers 25,000 for similar jobs. Therefore the Council may offer upto 5000 as a market supplement but it appears to be vairable so it can change with the market.

Well there are two options.

Your personal circumstance means you have to lump it, or you are worth more elsewhere and subsequently vote with your feet.

I hope that I never become complacent and have to lump it.

If you compare that to the private sector they still have a very good deal.

- Their pay hasn't been cut, they are just on short time
- They will probably be getting a pay rise in three years (how often does that happen in the private sector?)
- Cost of living pay? Never heard of it.
- The last place I worked the first seven sick days (in a row) were unpaid, the rest was based on how long you had worked there
- Does this mean people had company cars when they didn't really need them?
- I once worked at a place that paid 20p/mile (17p if you didn't submit a VAT reciept totalling more than the amount on your mileage claim form) you had to claim the rest of the government
- What are they?

They've still got a fair deal, its just that the one they had before was far too generous imo.

- reduce pay of all staff by an average of 5.4% (working hours cut)
So don't just get a pay cut full stop then, but work less and get paid less? No great hardship really, plenty of people in the private sector are getting a pay cut and being asked to work longer hours too
- no pay increments for all employees for two years (2011/12 and 2012/13);
Same as most private sector workers then
- no expected cost of living pay award for two years in line with whatever is agreed nationally
What on earth is a cost of living pay award and why do they get one?
- measures to reduce sickness absence in the workplace (only the first 3 days paid I think)
Well that won't work as most people chucking a sickie will take the first day or two off. NOT paying them for the first and second day off sick would be far better
- restructure essential and contractual car user entitlements + remove lease scheme
Right, so not give people who don't need cars cars, seems about right? I mean, JUST let the "essential" car people have one and save even more?
- payment of mileage rates at the government approved rate
So do they get more now? FFS
- removal of all market supplements;
[i]No idea what a market supplement is, I presume it's not glucosamine[/]

Nope. Its a question of attracting the right people I guess.

I wouldn't accept it.

But only because I could find a job that pays better elsewhere.

havig a couple of hour off a week means bks all to most people i imagine

the cost of living rise is the rise for inflation

with regards to cars my guess is they will just reduce the amount people get - meaning those doing high mileages will end up subsidising the council!

Anyway, typically this thread has become council bashing! The question is would you accept such a paycut or risk going elsewhere
