Just got ready to go out in the alfa for supplies now the roads are a little clearer to find this.

Obviously the scumbag didn't feel the desire to either knock on my door or leave a note!
My problem is do I claim through my insurance or not? It's a '97 Alfa so the car is only worth £700 or so, & I reckon the repair would not be economical to do. I can't leave it because the door will not shut properly, the window mechanism is crushed so thwe window won't open or close. Also the doorskin is pierced so will start to rust soon.
It must have happened sometime in the night, although parked near my house I didn't hear it.
I hate people who do things like this whose first thought is "did anyone see me, can I get away with it"? Apart from ruining my Christmas it means a perfectly good car will more than likely get scrapped, costing me in the long term with increased premiums etc.
Not much of a rant I know, seriously lacking swear words & threats of violence, but believe me I couldn't get away with typing my real thoughts!!!
The ONLY blessing is that I bought this car to protect my TVR from the winter elements, & to a point I suppose it has served it's purpose, albeit with a lot of it to come!

Do you know of any good breakers yards where you might find a replacement? Maybe in the right colour if you're lucky!

Yeah dont bother with insurance. Get down the scrappy and find a new door. Have a look on an alfa forum, might be someone breaking for parts.

At £700, don't even think about telling your insurance.

It's annoying, but either

a) Try and find a new door in a scrapyard

or

b) Pursue true bangernomics and bodge it to stay shut. You have a door on the other side for people to enter/exit biggrin

Bad luck and a shame for the old Alfa.

Jan/Feb 2009, the son of someone a few doors down the road (usual thing, neighbours a few doors away that you don't know at all) lost it on the snow and pushed in the front wing on our 1997 106. The father had the decency to bring the son to our door and 'confess'. We put it through the insurance, it was repaired and we had a hire car for the duration and that was that. The father said if it had happened to his car, he'd expect the driver to do the same and come forward. Pretty decent person and a good example to his son.

Shame your incident didn't work out the same way. frown

I've just had a quick skim on ebay and have found doors for Alfa's for £50 or less. The positive thing here is that the red colour is a popular Alfa colour, so you're more likely to find a suitable replacement.

Obviously you shouldn't need to be out of pocket at all, but unfortunately there are some right s out there. You will be much more out-of-pocket if you go down the insurance route though

Its hard to tell from the photo, but as long as the main damage is to the door then just get another one from ebay/scrappy. Red should be an easy colour to find and £100 should do it. You are very lucky they hit the door, the rear quarter panel and your car would be totally uneconomical to repair.

Bad luck though. What at total scumbag, i bet you would love to have caught them in the act..

That's good, thank you for that. My main problem is that I am partially disabled & not in the first flush of youth, & doing work myself & even wandering around a scrappy in not an option I am afraid. Add in the fact that I am relatively new to the area & don't know anyone or have decent contacts anymore & you begin to see why for me it's a bigger deal than you might first think.
Still, if I can get a door for that I am sure I could find someone to fit it for me.

Thank you to all of you who have made suggestions.

I had a minor coming together with a integra type r , in my civic type r a few years ago when i slid on ice in the street. Itwas 5 am a nd i could have easily made off, i didnt though. I knocked the lad out of bed. In return he was most helpful, found a very cheap quote for the work and we sorted it out amicably.

Sorry to see that.
Not worth claiming - someone ran into the rear door of our 147 a while back and it was near enough £1000 to repair with new parts.
As mentioned above try Ebay, JustAlfaSpares, Alfa Betta Cars etc.
Hope you get it sorted.

It's already been said... Get yourself down to the local scrappy (or try ebay). Bet you can get a door for 50 quid (ish), allow yourself an hour or two for fitting it and the job's a good 'un. You can then devote the rest of your life to finding the that caused the damage, and then punch his fking teeth down his throat! Or VBRJ if the perpetrator is female...

Have a look on ebay for a door that would suit your car. If you find one in my area (Milton Keynes) then I will be happy to go and look at it for you, and if necessary collect it on your behalf. I'm sure that there is a fellow PH'er that lives near you who could fit it for you.

It is Christmas after all!

Once again thank you all. I have made a few calls which hopefully will be fruitful. Only one suitable on ebay is silver, & once painted & parts swapped over then fitted will no doubt rape me, so going to try & hold out for a red one at least!!

Another vote for a new door here as well. Won't take long to put on, but the mismatch colour (even if you get the right colour) will be huge.

Go to firstchoice website.Put in your requirements and you should get numerous responses with hrs from breakers with exactly what you need/want for between 40-80 quid.

Call a local garage (try nationwide autocentre) local to yourself if you can as their prices are very reasonable. Should be around 100 quid to fit the door.
