What compact?

I'm looking for a relatively cheap compact for the gf for christmas, It's just going to be for usual every day use, so a point and click would be perfect. Anyone got any recommendations? Ideally from a high street store as I think online shopping is pretty much out of the question now!

There have been a few threads on this recently so worth doing a search.

Panasonic's generally seem to get rave reviews but my approach would be to have a browse on Amazon and read some of the customer reviews and see what takes your fancy, then pop into Jessops or somewhere and have a go with them.

Argos have a deal on today for the Nikon Coolpix S570 @ £66.66 which is £30 less than anyone else including Amazon. They also offering a half price accessory pack with a 4GB card and leather hold.

If I hadn't already bought a camera for a present; I'd be interested in any feedback on how good these are. Would hope fairly good as has a 5x optical zoom and with the Nikon name I'd hope reasonable quality.

I haven't played with one for a couple of years so it may have changed, but on that evidence not very good at all. Plasticky, with a cheap lens and iffy IQ.

As per the other thread I'd have a bottom of the range Canon Ixus...

Can't go wrong with something like a Canon Ixus 105 tbh.

Also, a nice small panasonic lumix are great fvm imo.
