Following on from the MG ZT thread running, I currently have a MG ZT190. I haven't had it that long but i'm starting to feel that I need abit more. After looking at ST220s they seem to be quite good value and quite alot of car for the money. I've also been looking at GS300s, 530D/535/540's, Passat w8s and even the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Now it's not that I am unhappy with the ZT it's just..not fast enough i guess. This is my main issue with it. It does everything else perfectly. The ideal would be a 260 but funds do not allow. My budget would be up to about £4000. I am a bit put off the BMW just because it's a obvious choice I guess ( probably stupid I know ) which probably means it would be the one to go for.

Would a ST220 actually be that much faster?

No. Sorry! smile I looked at these, ZT190's and 330's - Truthfully, they were all 'pretty much of a much-ness' The ZT sounds best (Sacrilege I know!), the Mondeo is the better handler at 5/10ths and the 330i is the better car (Not the best ever, but the better).

I went with 330i. Would I have been happy with the others? Yes, yes I would. Were any faster than the others? Nope. Not noticeably!

(I know that probably didn't help, but should allow you to see that there isn't much in them all!) smile

I suspected as much to be honest. I have been considering 'performance modifications' as it were, but to be honest i don't think it would make much difference. Perhaps a Scooby is the answer but i don't think I could live with the interior of the Impreza.

What about a nice, late Accord Type R?

Probably no faster than the ST220/330i etc. but delivers performance in a different way.

Vectra 3.2 GSI? I know that they don't have the best rep but I seem to remember evo rating them.

Ha! hehe You are me AICMFP - that was my train of thought precisely! That 535i suggested does look rather nice though!

You are right it does look nice. I do however have some deep rooted prejudice toward BMWs which is stopping me from buying one I think.

Oh... just had another thought. V70R! Mmmm

I suspect the ST220 will handle better (I haven't driven a ZT190, but I've spent a lot of time in various STs and they really are very impressive for a large FWD car) but, based on my old ZS180 I wouldn't say the performance difference would be very great. It's obviously a personal thing, but I also doubt it would have any more character, in fact probably somewhat less.

I'd say the ST is a very sound choice if you just want a replacement, but for something that actually feels different I'd look elsewhere. A nice creamy straight six BMW of some description? An Impreza? A slightly small warm/hot hatch?
