Just wondered what the best and most reliable 4wd is, up to about £4000 with proper difflocks etc.

My wife is thinking about selling her beloved 405 and buying some form of 4x4 but something better than our CRV (with winter tyres)

Reliability is the biggest headache. She used to have a Landrover which was brilliant offroad but cost an absolute fortune to run.
I'm thinking Subaru Forester / Toyota Hilux perhaps. Is a Landrover discovery any more reliable?

Any other suggestions welcome. Looking for something reasonably big but not massive if you know what I mean.

Thanks

Old Defender? Would be very easy to fix, like a giant mecchano set!

80 Series Landcruiser if you want reliable & not having to fix it every weekend, they are also quite nice to drive & a nice place to be.

That would be my suggestion...assuming it's not 'too big'??

The manual ROW version will basically go anywhere!

Oddball choice would be a Daihatsu Terios - the original ones are permanent 4x4 with a lockable centre diff. Very capable indeed, if small and a bit Noddy-like. Not sure if the later ones use the same 4x4 arrangement?

In what way isn't the CRV performing ?

Very few 4x4's have diff locks.

All Land Rovers are unreliable, old ones are cheaper to repair though.

Land Cruisers are reliable and the VX has diff locks but they weigh LOADS and stopping in the snow with 2.5 tons isn't quick.

Land Cruiser or a Patrol

I personally like land rovers, but I admit they are not the best

just picked up a tidy forester, non turbo 2003 with fsh for about £4k. Too early to tell how reliable it will be yet, but its comfortable and more car like than the cherokee we have too.

Which leads me to my other suggestion, you should be able to get a pretty nice KJ cherokee for £4k

They are about the same size inside, both pretty capable off road, and fine on it
