Just watching a program about the Veryron and they are going for a top speed run. Im a little confused by the comentary.

"First a few laps to warm up the car, then the driver accelerates into the next banked corner at about 250mph.

Here the veyron is only using 280 horse power, it needs its remaining 721 horse power to reach its top speed.

When the car comes out of the banked curve and onto the straight the driver floors the accelerator and hangs on. At 253mph the Veyron covers more than 4 miles in 60 seconds"

Is it really only using 280hp to go 250mph?

yes 280bhp is about right for 250kph/156mph. It's a slippery shape with a small frontal area, but has 4WD drivetrain losses.

Thats what I thought but they definately said MPH. I have sky+ and hit rewind to check.
They said the car could go faster, "260mph but its computer limited to 253mph. Top speed is recorded on a GPS unit on the dash its calibrated for Europe so the magic number is 407kph, thats 253mph"

Rewound to double check.

They must have cocked up, Just watched the James May top speed run and he said he took the banking at 200kph. Not that Top Gear is the font of all knowlage but as you say at 250mph it would never make the banking

Yes, it's not you, it's probably just a mistake in the programme. I've looked up the test track on the web and it says clearly that the banked corners at either end can be taken at up to 150mph.
