The best time to learn how to fit chains is of a summer evening on your drive with a nice cold beer.

Not as most folk do which is in the dark on their hands and knees in snow wearing a decent suit while desperately trying to get somewhere

Used chains for the first time this weekend and they were excellent. Had practiced in the warm a few weeks back. Also made sure that I had gloves, leggings, jacket that I didn't mind getting wet AND black from the winter road crap. 5 mins to put on, 5 mins to take off.

+1 to that.

Even so it can be a messy, finger numbing cold and dangerous job. Not much fun in a blizzard with trucks and cars slipping and sliding around while grappling with awkward fitting cold steel in the dark and wet. I now have a quick fit self centring type chains. it takes about 30secs per wheel and no fumbling about or reaching into the wheel arch.
