Roads around here are largely untreated, 8 mile journey to make.

For work in the morning can either take my AWD audi tt with half worn all season tyres (225x40x18 front, 245x40x18 rears) or take the mrs primera dci (FWD) equipped with new snow tyres all round (205x50x17).

the reason for snow tyres are on the wife's car was last year it struggled to get off our flat drive onto the road, the tt had no problems with propulsion (traction control off) but the abs was shockingly bad and stopping was more of an issue (handbrake was more effective).

which would you use?

i would have thought either would be fine.

but just in general driving on icy, snowy, salty roads i would much rather be using the less valuable car.

Clearly use the one with snow tyres in order to grip the snow, 4WD does nothing for braking or turning....it does however allow you to gain more speed for your accident.

I have had an identical dilemma, fwd fiesta with winter tyres or a3 quattro with all season tyres.

The fiesta has been unbelievably better than the a3, which was an absolute handful this evening compared the sure footed fiesta.

Snow tyres being better in snow, who'd have thought!?

In fact if we all bought winter tyres our country would continue to work.....except the airports and trains!

The Primera.

I shall mainly be driving the winter-shod MX 5 tomorrow, rather than the Prius with half-worn energysavers (although to be fair when brand new they were not too bad in the snow)

Depends on how competent your Mrs is at driving in the snow in a TT biggrin

Take the Primera but hide the keys for the TT

Winter shod Nissan.

We had the choice of a fwd Twingo or rwd MX5 to get to a hospital appointment 70 miles away, the MX5 is wearing winters so it was a no brainer. Getting some winters for her Twingo next year, the difference is so big.

I saw something on another forum that I thought was a good rule of thumb:

4x4 on winters > fwd on winters > rwd on winter > 4x4 on summers > fwd on summers > rwd on summers

If the TT has DSG I'd go with the primera even without winter tyres!

ETA: So Primera for sure.

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks that!

But then, of course, my brakes don't work properly because the ABS interferes with my expert braking on ice....

Agree. Did Newcastle > Reading today in a Fiesta 1.25 (I avoided taking the BMW oop north) and it made the snow a complete doddle.

I absolutely hate wkers who stand around pointing camcorders hoping to see an incident. A warning to those that do this, don't be suprised if your little toy gets smashed to the floor. As you were saddo's

what he said - you can be the best driver in the world, in the most suitable vehicle, but that still won't stop 1 series BMW woman sliding into the back of your car at the lights

Just assume they are there, and don't drive like a muppet...

+1

Nothing could stop my old 1.25 last year. Compacted snow on a 10% hill, no trouble.
