4x4 Is Much Better Than I Expected
Discussion
Having only had experience with front- and rear-wheel drive cars in the snow before this latest bumper helping, I am really impressed by this weekend's (borrowed) steed and its four-wheel drive. Obviously I expected something like a Range Rover on winter tyres to be awesome, but this isn't a bad-ass off-roader, just a B7 Audi RS4 Avant, complete with four past-their-best ContiSport 3 summer tyres. I fully expected it just to sit there spinning all four wheels as opposed to two, but it just digs in and buggers off up the road when pulling out of snow-covered junctions or ascending a hill. I'm most impressed with ze Quattro, it has to be said.
No, it's not as good as a two-wheel drive car on winter tyres, but it has vastly better traction than I was expecting for something with four big, wide summer tyres. Grip and braking performance are as appauling as you'd expect, although on the upside I imagine it would do massive skids in an empty car park.
It's given me a desire to buy some sort of proper 4x4, complete with winter tyres, for some serious snow driving next year. Hmm, haven't Discovery 3s come down in price recently! Damn PH Classifieds!
Here is a gratuitous shot of the car that was nice and clean on Friday:
