I need some advice please...

Looking to get a 4x4 for the wife, up to £16,000.

Current shortlist is:

Subaru Forester
LR Disco
Jeep

Which is the best all-rounder?

Jeep what?

That looks a bit like saying 'I want to get a front wheel drive hatch for the wife. Shortlist so far is the Honda Civic, Vauxhall Astra or Ford'.

Is this a kneejerk 'omg there is snow' thing? If so, get 4 winter tyres or something instead. Much cheaper.

The Jeep or the Disco probably, but I'd spend some money on driving lessons for her and ensure the vehicle has the correct tyres given the amount of off roaders I saw stuck yesterday; ended up having to tow one vehicle blocking the road so it comes down to driver ability and tyres as much as anything.

It's a serious request and not totally snow related - growing kids, more space etc etc.

Jeep Cherokee or possibly 4 door Wrangler...know very little about either.

In fact I know very little about all 4x4's as I've never considered one before...hence the post.

I love my Subaru outback, I drove from Nottingham to Essex using the back roads because the M1,M11,A1M etc etc was all at a stand still, plodding past all the stuck and abandoned cars. I would consider an outback. When I brought mine, I originally wanted a Forester, but there was none near me for sale. So I got the outback instead, the only difference is the outback is longer where as the Forester is shorter and taller.

You do realise that many estates are more spacious inside than the 4x4s?

Perfect car is the Toyota Landcruiser Amazon. 100 series would do you good - get a good one for your budget also.

Cheers

rottie102 has a point. There are many estates with 4wd and more boot space than soft roaders.

The hell with all the previous ideas, go midway between big 4x4 and large estate car. Volvo V70 Cross Country would fit the bill for what you want perfectly.

Cheers for input so far.

Another reason for the 4x4 route rather than say A4 quattro route is the elevated driving position...

Mitsubishi Outlander has crept onto the list apparently.

(think the Amazon may be a tad 'sledge hammer to crack a nut' but thanks!)

not sure about the latest volvo xc70s, but the ealier models were only in 4x4 whilst under 30mph, not that its a problem, but it was something I was unaware when I got mine.

I had a XC70 and I still own a Subaru Outback, the Subaru outback is miles in front in terms of 4x4 capability.

Personally I'd still be going the Volvo Cross Country root as you do still get a slightly elevated driving position, having said that it has more to do with my feelings on 4x4s that unless you are planning to tow things around and do some serious off roading most people don't need them.

Ive currently got a 2003 jeep cherokee 3.7 and 2003 forester (non turbo). The jeep has been reliable, but slightly thirsty over the last 18 months, I've only had the forester a few weeks, but so far very impressive. i'd say the fozzie is a better drive, but both are comfortable on long runs, and secure on the wintery roads (not fitted winters)

I'd say there is a bit more boot space in the subaru - it's a bit longer in the load space, if not as tall. The jeep is a bit more generous in the seating area.

I used to have an xj cherokee which was completely reliable too, and before that I ran a dodge nitro for a while. It was an early one and the 4x4 system was a bit crude - I beleive they are better now (more like current cherokee)

Did you miss it? You leapt to a conclusion that doesn't necessarily exist.

For every eventuality..............Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara, Toyota hilux.....get 1 with Truckman or Snugtop and you'll cover all the bases.

Except load length is'nt very big, often less than a regular estate car & an awful ride.
