AVO update please

Can those who had any trouble with avo shocks and bushes please give an update? did the bearings solve the problems of destroyed bushes?

Yes.....so far so good....I have had the spherical bearings in since removong the torn bushes for nearly 1 year....everybody on AVO's should upgrade/change to this option.

would you recommend having them all round (front and rear) or is it the rear thats worse? have also heard that the avo springs are a bit long I wouldnt mind a bit of extra clearance but how bad is it?

These are the fronts after a few months, so yes I'd say use the sphericals all round.


Ride height was a little high for my liking, rear wheels in particular looked like they'd had an arguement wth the wheel arches !

First question is to Phillpott - why is that house in the background of your bottom photo held together by a huge elastic band?

Anyway back on topic. I had AVOs on mine, got a broken front spring in March, had to hacksaw the bolts out and fit brand new bolts and bushes. Then in May the car got an MOT advisory because one of the rears was leaking slightly. I fitted new GAZ shocks and springs all round in July, and the front bushes were already as bad as those in the photos above. That was in about 1,000 miles (trips to Chatsworth and S-Club plus a few runs around the local area).

Some advised at the time that spherical bearings would make the ride harder, and they probably do - but the new GAZ have them and they feel absolutely fine.

guys, thanks again for your advice on this (and every) topic. Mike, I presume picture 3 is to show high ride hight not just to show off your fantastic car, I dont think it looks too high, what tyres have you got fitted in that photo? thanks also for your recent e mails re: my rear brakes may need some more advise in the new year.

Because the owners not a TVR fan so didn't want a hundred cable ties around his house !

Yes, picture was to give idea of ride height on Avo's, certainly not to show off car (paintwork looks lot better in photo than in the flesh)
Tyres in picture are 205/60 VR15 Vredestein's, now sits on same size Toyo CF1's. looking extra high there because suspension not settled after jacking up to fit wheels

Are there any shocks you can get which are “fit and forget” (apart from tinkering with the settings)? My original Koni’s are still working well after 90,000mls but it seems all the replacement options have durability issues. Just a few months on a set of bushes? That’s a joke! What sort of product testing went into those? It seems like the manufacturers want their customers to do the R&D – much like TVR did I suppose! Or is this just what you have to put up with if you can’t afford the really expensive stuff?
