Hi Guys,
I have a need to record and interview a couple of people, the in built mic on the 550 isnt really up to the job (although not bad i guess for an inbuilt mic). After reading good reviews about the Hama RMZ14 i buight one and, after just trying it, all i can say is that the people who gave this good reviews on the dis-information superhighway must have s
t in their ears. The setting 'high', 'low' and 'off' should be 'Lots of hiss' - 'Less Hiss' and 'No Hiss cause its switched off'
I don't expect some kind of uber stella sound quallity from what is a cheap mic, however I do expect it to work properly.
So, do you guys have any recomendations? All I really need over the built in mic is something that records spoken word a little 'nicer' than the inbuilt mic, it always gives that 'slightly boomy in a large room feel'. Is the Rode 'VIDEOMIC' any good? IF nothing under 150 quid is actually any good then they can suffer with the built in mic or pony up the dough for a sound recordist.

I know that's not what you're after, but how about recording the audio on an external device, something like that:

and then synchronising it in PP.
The quality should be pretty good and synchronising is very easy.

Ta, Yeah i've been looking at these too.
It would appear though that the hissing (or at least a large part of it) is due to the automatic gain control on the camera itself. There appears to be a possible workaround which im going to try, I'll report back on how well it works (or not) as im sure there are a few 550 owners on here that would be interested. Apparently the issue affects the 7d as well, not sure about 5DII though. All down to not being able to turn this 'feature' off. It looks likely that agc is set to become an audio equivelant of the 'direct print button' issue on canon dslrs.

External recorder is absolutely the way to go; AGC is a pain in the arse. You might want to give the latest Magic Lantern hack for the 550 a bash; I'm not sure but it may allow you to disable/bypass AGC.
While it may be a bit overkill for a 550, the Zoom H4N external recorder is the darling of the 5dii/7d cine crowd, especially as it has proper XLR inputs.
