Ariel's New Atom Mugen

270bhp for naturally aspirated limited-edition special

Ariel has revealed plans for a limited-edition Atom Mugen, to be unveiled at the Autosport show at the NEC in January.

The car, which is being created to celebrate a decade of the epically minimalist Atom, is intended as the ultimate track-focused Atom.

Ariel intends to make a limited run of 10 Atom Mugens in collaboration with Mugen Euro, the European arm of the famous Japanese Honda tuner.

The car will use the K20Z engine from the Honda Civic Type R, but tweaked to produce a normally aspirated 270bhp - which is quite a lot when you consider that Ariel's own supercharged version officially puts out only 30bhp more.

Ariel is keeping somewhat mum about the rest of the Atom Mugen's spec, but each car will feature a distinctive livery, and will be fitted with a plaque signed by the Mugen and Ariel technicians responsible for the build of the car.

"We found that both ourselves and Mugen had the same meticulous attention to detail in the build of our cars and their engines." says Simon Saunders, director of Ariel. "One Ariel technician makes a car, one Mugen technician builds an engine. The result is a truly hand made car with a hand made engine."

Ariel says that it will reveal detailed technical specifications for the car when it is launched in January.

Mugen wizardy making use of a fantastic chassis. Love it.

270bhp NA should be amazing too. All it needs is a 12k redline and it'd be a dream come true.

270hp of NA power is quite something, not too sure about the colour scheme though.

Very nice. It'll be interesting to see how the price and performance compare to the supercharged version.

Surely it will leave less room as the compression will be higher?

This has to be one of the most desirable track cars. Obviously the engine would be immense fun. But I also love the fact you are surrounded by huge metal beams protecting your sides. Far better than the competition in that respect.

You sure? I think that power can be achieved with intake, exhaust Mods, cams, remap.

Yes thanks. What's your point? If the compression hasn't been raised (maybe it has, I'm speculating as to what mugen have changed) then it will still take to supercharging with supporting fueling Mods.

should be a screamer, get figures for an n/a. Adding a supercharger would defeat the purpose of this car.

Why does gold look soooo good on certain cars.

I suspect this will actually feel a fair bit slower then the supercharged models as the torque will be significantly down. It's the lbft/kg that gives you the 'shove'.

The main way they will be getting this extra power will be through increased revs. Not that exciting really, considering how much it will cost I bet.
