Repost: 2.9 V6 Rebuild
Discussion
My son is rebuilding his 2.9 V6 Cologne engine. His list so far is:
Full top and bottom end gasket kit; piston rings; bearings, dizzy, leads, ignition coil, and perhaps a new starter. However, he's having real trouble finding a steel timing gear for the 2.9? He can find one for the 2.8, priced at just over £160, but nowhere does one that will fit the 2.9 it seems. Any advice is much appreciated, as he'll be cracking on with his rebuild in the next week,
Thanks,
Tony

Hi
I have always found everything I need at Burtons? (Burton Power Products)
Is this post below of any use, seems to indicate that Specialised Engines are the guys to contact? Not tried them myself

Hi Tony
The 2.9 is on a timing chain and not gears. I've just rebuilt mine (first start tomorrow hopefully) and would add water pump and thermostat to that list, and a fresh pair of engine mounts whilst he's at it. Also not forgetting new stretch bolts for the cylinder heads.
Enginestuff.co.uk are good for lots of parts, listed under sierra and granada. Fairly cheap too.
I've taken a load of pics during the work so if he hits a tricky bit and wants any for reference just pm me.
Good luck!

Hi everyone, just an update. Nick and his friend Rob have had the heads off the engine, and discovered it's as clean as a whistle (like new infact).
The dry compression test yielded 150lb compression across all but number 4, which got 125lb. The wet test boosted all the figures up (some hit 200lb, other 165lb, and pesky number 4 got to 145lb), but they didn't measure the amount of oil in each cylinder so it wasn't truly accurate, hence the odd figures. However, the decision was taken check the valves, and sure enough number 4's exhaust valve had a bit of wear, so all the valves have had all the carbon ground off them, and then been lapped back in with fine paste. It all looks very shiny and clean, and new gaskets, rocker cover seals, crank oil seal, dizzy cap and arm, ignition coil, leads, and plugs have been order for it. Hopefully he'll get another few years of loyal service out of what looks to be a very well cared for engine.
I think Nick is planning on a bottom end rebuild sometime next year when his funds permit.
Thanks for all the advice on here, was greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Tony
