Its German Law that states from 1st of December that cars have to be fitted with Winter tyres to comply with driving conditions

so why are hire companies charging extra for winter tyres? surely they're breaking the law by providing cars without winter tyres (for those that dont take the option)

anyone know any thing in detail about this?

I rented cars twice in Germany in October time... twice it had winter tyres on, and no extra charge for them.

thats pretty much what i got too from my research

however if you have an accident and even if its not your fault and you have summer tyres you can be deemed liable

The last hire car I had in Germany had winter tyres on it in July... Most odd, as was the handling!

its one of those things where if you ask for a econ car and get one with winter tyres fitted they wont charge you extra.

if you request them specifically they'll charge you.
