Currently in the process of seperating from legal and was wondering how dealers view trading in a car for a cheaper one and giving cash back. I have had no experience of this and dont know if it is even an option. I have a 2006 (new shape) x k coupe with all the extras with about 30000 miles on clock and will need something for kids and dog moving forward. I could try a pvt sale but was wondering if i bought something for say £15k at a dealers would they pay me a cheque for balance or is this just not going to happen in current economic climate. Thanks for any replies. Paul

Wouldn't say it won't happen, but not going to be the easiest unless you choose a car a dealer is struggling to move on.

Yep it would need to be... just thought i would see if it ever happens... if not means just more cash to legal and then get a proper fam,ily car for full value..

i dont see why it should make any difference at a larger dealer.

little backstreet garage maybe a little different depending on their cashflow

We do it all the time....just find a garage that sells the type of car you want to move on, or why not sell it outright and go shopping for another car

Take the XK to a Jag dealer and sell it for cash, and then go elsewhere for your replacement car?

I tried this a couple of years ago - if you try and do the deal with one dealer they'll just give you book price for your car and ask you to pay top price for the car you want.

Best bet is to sell privately, or to a Jag dealer as another poster suggests, and buy your new car privately or from another dealer to get the best price as a cash putrchaser.
