I travel 150 miles a day for work and it is costing me a packet - I have 3 grand to spend on a car - what is the best car I can get for the money that is the best for fuel consumption

VW Lupo diesel, Seat Arosa diesel, or, if you want a bit more room and power, some 1.9 JTD Punto's do 70mpg + and come in at a little less than half your budget last I looked.

depends on size really....

Mondeo TDCi, Focus 1.6 TDCi, Fiesta Derv (all cheap to buy and run) i have a 2.0 TDCi mondeo 54 plate as my daily work runner and get about 50 MPG
