hi all

i have a very small drip of fluid coming from my slave cylinder at the moment 1 or 2 drips over a couple of weeks
do i need to change it now or is this something that won't let me down for the next 6 months or so ?

if and when i do change it i would like to try and to do it myself
so whats my best option on getting the new slave cylinder , i've seen some of the other posts on this but i need some guidence on what will be easier to change

tvr parts do this at £60 ish is this part a straight swop and so will be easier to fit ?

on the posts there's mention of a landrover part £10 to £20 but i think i will have to find a new nipple as the old one wont fit "hassle"
if you have to fit a new nipple does this mean on taking the old nipple off i'll have to then fit a new hydrolic pipe and get a tool that shapes the end of the pipe to go over the nipple "hassle"

i'm a diy mechanic and need some guidence on this , i dont want to end up with taking my p&j to the local garage in bits lol

as always can i have your helpful advice on this

cheers keith

Hi Keith,

Just done this on my S3 and never did much spannering.
Do it as soon as you can, mine stopped working very suddenly.

I indeed got the Landrover slave partnumber 591231 and it fits OK.
And indeed you need to fit a 7/16 nipple. I borrowed a flare tool from work, also easy to do. Take the complete clutch pipe out of the car. Cut the old flare off, put the new nipple on and re-flare the existing pipe. You do not need a new pipe.

I found bleeding the most difficult part of all because the spanner cannot be turned a lot. Eventually used a 11 mm socket and a short extension on the ratchet to tighten the bleed nipple. Of course you will also need a "see through" plastic tube to drain/bleed the system.

Good luck, you can do it.

Keith I bought the landy part off ebay (new) for £8 nipple purchased sepearately from can't remember without checking the invoice but someone will advise on here shortly, then got garage to fit as although its not a major job it's a lot easier with a ramp. No more than an hour and halfs work at a garage so still relatively cheap. There is also a guide on how to change on S series web site with pics. Worth a go if you have access otherwise get an expert on it. HTH Damon (by the way mines an S3)

You can get a seal repair kit from MEVSPARES.co.uk part no. SP4190TV for about £6 it come's complete with new cover and a pack of grease. It's not too bad to change as long as you can get under the car alright, the fiddly bit is the bleeding. smile

thanks guys for your help

i really want to do this myself , but having to buy a flaring tool and maybe need new pipe "i know i'll damage my old pipe getting it off to re flare it " lol

so with the landrover part i think i may have to take it to the garage "bummer" possibly my garage would flare the end for me ?

anyone out there used the tvr carparts slave cylinder "will i be able to fit this if i dont have to mess about with the flaring tool"

Would imagine part from a TVR supplier would be the correct thread and therefore a simple straight forward replacement ?

Personnally if leak is so slight I'd go for the repair kit, may well do the job and if it doesn't its not exactly a fortune lost ?

Hi, I got a Land Rover one and had grief getting the right pipe connection, but probably got the wrong land Rover part. I then got one for a Rover SDi which was spot on, no need to change anything.

donnysoutherner , just did a google on that rover sdi part and looking at the photos it looks a good match
i got a part number of gsy101 , can you confirm that it was a straight swop over and the original nipple fitted ok ?

i'll get a price on this part from my local car factors and let you guys know how i get on

i'll also call tvr car parts to confirm if there part is a straight fit with no hassle

Hi Keith. I can understand why you want to do it your self but it could be a right bugger of a job without a ramp or flaring tool. If you live near Hertford why not get a quote from Bespoke Performance (previously TVR Centre in Arkley) 7 Fountain Drive, SG13 7UB - 01992 500038.
They did all my work last year and I can recommend them highly. Probably no more than an hour or so's work, they were charging £55.00p/h + vat so quite reasonable. Personnaly I'd put a new pipe on as well.
Cheers Joe.

I've always thought it strange that there is a solid pipe from the master Cylinder on the bulkhead to a slave Cylinder which is moving around... I cant afford the flexi-pipe replacement option (like Deadspider has wink )but has anyone ever thought of or fitted a short flexi pipe at the slave end with the rigid pipe then fastened to the bulkhead all the way back to the master ?

If the short pipe can be found with the right end and thread M12/7/16 then it doesnt really matter what length the flexi is... Its on my list of nice to do's...rolleyes

K wink

thanks everyone for your help and advice on this one

just to update you all on my way forward to do the slave myself with the least amount of hassle but satifaction in doing the job properly !

i did a google and found a company called "power track ltd" who specialise in slave cylinders to older cars , gave them the part number 74660035
this was no problem to them they had it in stock and it would be a straight swop over , no flanging required of having to replace the union nipple

the chap there "paul" tel 01753842680 was very helpful and knew of the tvr s issues with the slave cylinder on the cheaper types from ebay
i also bought a new master cylinder from them part number 64676310 once again it should be a straight swop "might as well go all the way now and do the lot"

this wasn't as cheap as the ebay ones "i didn't want to do the flanging and replace the nippple etc"
so i paid £48 +vat for each of the units and i'm happy with that knowing its the correct units being fitted and that fingers crossed i can do it myself
with help i'm sure from you guy's

thanks again keith
