Photo printing - having some size/framing issues

I'm printing and framing photos a for people this year, as cheaper/personal Christmas presents. However, the frames I always seem to like, don't seem to match up with any online photo printing service sizes.

For example, I've found a frame which would be perfect and with the mount has an aperture of 28x35cm - can I find somewhere who will print to this size? Can I heck! The reason I like this size is because it's the same ratio as 8x10, which a lot of my photos have been cropped to.

Am I going about things the wrong way here? I don't want to go the custom framing route due to time/cost.

Try looking for 14" x 11", it's a standard print size

Can't you just edit the image to the size required, then increase the canvas size to the readily available print size, e.g. order 20"x16" print with 28x35cm image in the centre, then just cut it out? I think it will be the cheapest and easiest way.

That sounds like the best solution... however, the software I'm using (iphoto!) doesnt let me add a white border! I really don't want to have to buy PS, as it would turn some simple, cheap gifts into something much more expensive!

The problem is (and I appreciated Simpos suggestion), the frame and mount which I can buy off the shelf are the sizes I mentioned in my post. I can't buy a mount (in town) at 14x11, or I'd have gone that route.

Ok, instead of adding a white border, can you just make a simple blank canvas of 20x16, then just paste the photo (already resized to 28x35cm) onto it?

er, Simpo's (and my) point is that 14x11 IS the size of aperature you said you've found:

14" = 35.56cm
11" = 27.94cm

Ok, it's not identical to the mm but I'm guessing the 0.06cm on width won't actually show and you'll have .56cm over on the length. Have you actually measured the aperture on the frame? You may find it's quoted in inches but actually cut in metric or vice-versa.

However, even if your software doesn't support putting borders on an image, if you size your image to just over the 28x35 aperture of your selected frame and then upload to Photobox and select a print size bigger than that, you can choose not to scale the image and then you'll automatically have the border you require when it's printed. (Hope you understand what I mean!)

As an aside... the pic I am printing is for my GF (and maybe one for my sister) who is a cool fashion designer type. Its the 'I Love You' stencil in my Graffiti gallary on foe-toe.smugmug.com

Techically probably quite naff, but I like how much is going on and how busy it is.

For the future, most art shops or framing shops will cut mounts to suit.
