Weekend toy....
Discussion
So been mulling this over for a while now and I have vowed I will get something interesting to enjoy during the course of next year..
I am looking to keep the spend to around £5k with insurance and economy not really a concern. I would like it to be a 4 seater or 2+2 if I can get one but it is not critical and I lean more towards classic style motoring these days, some I have thought of are: -
XJS (V12 preferably!)
TVR Wedge/V8s (Been there before and loved them!)
Triumph Stag
Triumph GT6
Alfa GTV6
Porsche 944
Capri
Something American with a big V8
Any other suggestions?
Cheers,
Hep

Tempting - I do like the idea of the M5! 159k seems scary though! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1997-BMW-M3-EVOLUTION-3-2-CO...

The problem with cars like those three for me is that they would be too tempting to drive everyday and I am weak willed enough to do it!

V12 XJ-S, the 5.3's are 3 speed and not as quick as you'd think. The 6.0 is the one to get and the XJ40 based 6.0 XJ12 V12 would also be worth a look too if Vee Jags appeal.
Ok, it's not a 2+2 but insurance is dirt cheap and its gotta a big old lump in it!

Spare is a loose term, I have been making do with just the daily hack for a year now and I am fed up of not having something more interesting to drive.
If you have a garage available, go for a kit car. The insurance on them is really cheap, and they hold their value very well. They are also mostly GRP (apart from the chassis/sus) so don't suffer from rot issues AND, being kit cars, are very very easy to work on/mend should you have to.
£5k gets you a basic spec 7 (an older westy?)
might get you something like a basic mojo or a fury/stylus. This is the perfect time of year to start looking too as prices are at their lowest. If you're REALLY mad, it would get you a decent Lomax with £2k left over (if you can find one for sale)

(my 2p's worth anyway)

BMW 635csi? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1989-BMW-635-CSI-AUTO-BLUE-/...
Merc 190 Cosworth? http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2314280.htm
Both of these would qualify for classic car insurance. For example, my 635 costs less than £160 p.a. on a 5k miles policy.
As with anything German of this period, check for rust.... everywhere.

A wedge - Poor handling, Poor fuel economy, relatively poor acceleration.
But I'd still have another - the noise, the look, the way they make you feel when you are driving, and let's not forget the bang and pop of the overrun (warning, you may drive a number of times through the same tunnel
). A nice V8 rumble is well worth it.

The 190's appeal as does that 635, always loved them!
Not really that into the ricers just a personal thing really as I know they are cracking motors just not for me I guess.
Cossie is an interesting prospect too... Loving the suggestions though folks and I am going to have a look at the previously mentioned Alfa S3 Spider if I get chance this week as that has appeal but I would prefer something that I can get wife and son in of a weekend really as it would get more use!
