A lady friend of mine is contemplating buying a sports car. She is very interested in buying the new Renault Wind Roadster. She is going from a Toyota Yaris 1.0 and is wanting to buys a sensible first sportscar.

We would like some constructive explanation as to which in your opinion is the better car and why. Pro's and con's would help her decide a lot and other contributory factors are insurance, depreciation, reliability and price of spare parts/servicing and economy. The Renault is a 1.2l engine and for comparison the Mazda would be a 1.8l.

Anyone that has ordered a Renault Wind Roadster, your comments would be welcome as you must have also considered the MX5. We will be watching this thread with interest smile

I saw the "wind" on the M1 on Wednesday its god awful!

Main reason its not French and blatantly has pedigree.

Get her sold on the MX5 its the only way!

Check carefully what she wants; It may be that she is actually looking for a cute convertible rather than something to drift on roundabouts.

I drive past a Wind every night on the way home, I can't help but think the poor things needs to fart.
I just can't get past the daft name, much like the Toyota Picnic or VW SHAAAAAAAAAAROOOOOOON!

That's about as helpful an answer I think you'll get here- it's only going to go one way anyway. For starters it's a Renault & unless the dealers have sorted their st out recently, are bds to deal with. Secondly it's a pony 1.2l. Thirdly it's a targa?? Forthly, it's wrong wheel drive.

I think i've covered all the Clarksonismshehe

Book a test drive instead.

Have seen a few winds and think it looks good, esp in white.......would think it's natural competition would be the Tigra though.

3/4 vision looks terrible & I can't see that being too easy to park- unless she can reverse park with mirrors.

The back sort of reminds me of the lotus europa. Dont know why. I can see what they are trying to do but no, not really a fan myself.
Saw 2 parked in matalan yesterday at the same time, passed one on the way in and had to double take when I saw the second.

The Wind is actually a dressed up Twingo, shock is actually a cut down old model Clio. So it's actually a (quote rubbish and unreliable) 13 year old design but I will concede it looks quite good. The Mazda will cost more to run but will be more reliable, nicer to drive and suffer from far less scuttle shake so swings and roundabouts really. If buying new under warranty there's probably not much in it for someone not really into cars.

The Wind is a surgical shoe to look at, truly a horrendous turd of a design that is the true successor to the banality that was the old Tigra. No, no, a thousand times no, even if it was the best handling car in the world, you will be laughed at.

I'd probably expect that the Mazda would hold its value a bit better...

Its a classic look which never gets old, whereas I can see the Winds "Beauty" Deminishing in a couple of years...

Mazda has a cult following and i'm sure any PHer would give her the thumbs up when she's driving her MX5! biggrin Like I did to that very attractive young blonde looking orgasmicaly cool going round a roundabout sideways at 5mph in the snow!!!

Conclusion? If she's wanting a "cute" car on a budget get the Wind, for everything else, theres the MX5.

The Wind has the 1.2TCE 100 engine, not too shabby HP for 1149cc...
Failing that, go for the nippier 1.6 engine shared with the Renaultsport Twingo.

She should just drive both and buy the one she prefers. I imagine that both would provide a bit of fun wind-in-hair motoring coming from a Yaris 1.0.

I think it all comes down to whether she likes driving and is really after a sports car. If she does and is then it has to be the MX5. If not, then which ever one she prefers to sit in and look at.

Thanks for the input guys. Test drive has already happened with the Clio in a frock, so that just leaves the MX5. Will let you know what she goes for.
