Nikon 50mm lens

why's is only 70 odd quid whereas other (this one for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-50mm-AF-S-f1-4G-Nikkor... are much much more?

Because one is new and buy it now whereas the other is used and the price is still rising?

Pretty sure this won't AF on any current digital body. If you're looking for a f/1.4 you want either the AF-D or AF-S

The older lens is less desirable because it will be manual everything. If you can live with that you get a bargain; if you need AF and AE (to be fully compatible with a modern body) then you have to stump up

I have the 1.4 and it is really good - but as Simpo says, if you don't need 1.4 there is a much cheaper 1.8

Only problem with the 1.8 is that is not AF-S. Not an issue for most but my camera (D5000) needs AF-S lenses. Which is annoying!

The 1.4 D is a bit cheaper than the G if you want to save £50 new

What body are you planning to use this on ?

Some of the Nikon lower-end bodies have the ability to meter with manual focus lenses and have an OK 'range-finder' function to aid manual focus. I *think* the D50 or D60 (one of the two) had this functionality. But check if they need to be "AI" or "AI-S" lenses or if they'll also accept "pre-AI" lenses.

FWIW, manual focus lenses can be a bargain if you're prepared to give them a try. Also depends on the subject matter - wouldn't bother with them for fast-moving subjects, but for mostly static stuff then they're no problem at all.

I have a couple of old manual focus lenses, one of which (the 105mm f2.5) is an absolute corker and produces wonderful images, so don't discount them thinking that they're not up to the standards of modern lenses, because they often can be.

For the 50mm lenses, also have a look for the 50mm f2 which is lovely and crisp.

I've got a D5000 so also have the problem as to which auto-focusing lenses I can use.

can I only use AF-S then?

Reading this in conjunction with your other thread about going pro, you may find that some agencies for their own reasons wont accept files from that camera as it's consumer rather than pro-sumer/full pro

Not telling you to change body if you dont see the need, but just adding it in as a comment WRT lens choice and also in the grander scheme of things.

It's something to consider, just something I've found here and there with agency perception. Some dont care, others keep an eye out on a "these are our standards" basis. Saying that Alamy as an example seem to be happy enough with it.

You've got me thinking now. Do you think I should trade in my D5000 for a D90 (or any other suggestions?). It would be around £150 difference but I'd be able to use a lot more lenses....i think. For starters I would be able to get the much cheaper 50mm f1.8.

What are peoples thoughts?

Don't take my word for it but I thought the D90 was considered a consumer grade camera as well. I'm pretty sure it has the same sensor as the D5000. I don't know what level pro grade starts at.

D300, for prosumer at least.

Just delete the EXIF, resize and say it was taken with a D3X

could do that but the main reason I would want to change is because I can only use AF-S and AF(?) lenses with the D5000 if I want the autofocus to work

Are there other lenses that you're interested in that won't work with the D5000? The reason I ask is that you could spend a lot more than the difference in price between the 1.4 and 1.8 50mm if you upgrade the camera. On top of that the 1.4 is a better lens anyway.
