Thing in my tree

[Simpo Two]

Was idly watching the snow from an upstairs window when this stonking great green thing lands in a tree about 20 feet away. I didn't think it would stay long enough for me to get a camera and put the right lens on, but it did!



I'm no ornithologist but I think there are two kinds of woodpecker and this is the big gren version!

Nope, I took 4 photos then it flew off. Grabbed one quickly as a banker, then rested the lens on the inside of the window for the others.

Now that it knows you have wood on the premises, it may come back.

Yep, that's a greeny, we have quite a few around here. They are very fond of peanuts, you might try a feeder to encourage him back, though normally they are ground feeders being particularly into ant grubs. You might even see a great spotted woodpecker on the feeder, they are mostly black and white with a red flash on head and underside of tail. You would be very lucky indeed to see a lesser spotted.

You are lucky to capture it on a tree! Whenever I see one of those, they are always on the ground!

I guess it doesn't like landing in snow!
