Help! - Sub £100 Digital Camera

Daughter is fairly interested in photography and her current freebie digital camera is on the way out.

I have a max budget of £100. What are the recommendations and why?

I've just bought a canon A3100 for my father.

Based on decent reviews, generally decent experience of canon camera on the whole and most importantly, it was £86 a couple of days back.

Also selected because a quick play suggested that the full auto modengot most things right most of the time.

My father wants a point and shoot - not something that he has to drive.

If shes truly interested in photography, I would wait for a bigger budget. If she just wants to take pictures, there's only a few decent cameras in your price range.

We use the Nikon S3000 coolpic's camera's in the office and the quality of the pictures is fantastic for their size. Come in nice colours too which may appeal...

If you were to look at the s/h route you could just about make it into Canon 300D territory. Ebay obviously. Sold my old 300D last week and got £150 or so, but I did throw in a few bits and bobs, but they generally seem to kick around much lower than that.

It may not be a brilliant camera, but you'll start to learn the basics of photography.

The downside is that next Christmas it'll cost you £400+ to buy something with a bigger sensor.

The £100 Canon A490 launched a year ago(?) is now down to £50 in Argos (memory card not included)

How big is this in the hand or pocket? Would anyone change it for a smaller Ixus or the like.

IMO I would avoid anything running on AA or AAA batteries. Major PITA!

Playing with it in the shop, I thought it was tiny. But I use a Canon 50D most of the time, so I'd think a box brownie was pretty small...
