Cross yourself three times next time you see a black cat, then slap a bald bloke hard on top of the head, whilst shouting 'take it Nigel'
This is worth doing, for s
ts and gigglesIf it's very obviously in the follicle of an eyelash, try pulling the lash out to let it drain.
Wouldn't want Dettol anywhere near an eye
but boiled water with a teaspoon of salt (aim for about as salty tasting as tears), on a compress as hot as you can bear should help.
Unless it's unbelievably painful, really swollen or causing some other problem I probably wouldn't bother taking it to a doctor - PP's suggestion of a pharmacist is a good one.

Bathe the sty regularly with cotton wool dipped in a bowl of hot water from the kettle with a dash of Dettol in it.
The heat will encourage the infection to the surface.
This is about the nearest best advice! The heat will encourage the infection to the surface.
Bathe the eye in cooled down boiled water and mix in a couple of drops of baby shampoo, clean around the lashes with the cotton bud with the mixture, then use a hot flannel over the lump for a few minutes before massaging it with your finger. you'll need to do this for some time. If it's red and sore you can get some antibiotic drops from the pharmacy, such as chloramphenicol, which might help a bit, or if the eyelid is swollen, get the GP to prescribe oral antibiotics.
