My wine rack would always have space for this...

... the bottle above consumed this evening ..
but it is a tad tricky to get hold of and perhaps an acquired taste (bought most of my supplies from the vineyard)
Having said that: I'd say that what you should go for is a mixture of everyday wines you know you like, some you fancy trying and a few for special occasions. The mixture cases you can get from the various wine clubs are a good way to fill up your wine rack and discover wines you'd not thought of trying before.
...then try and remember which of the new wines you actually like..and add them to your 'favourites list'

Majestic Wine do free delivery, have a decent selection and their mixed cases are pretty good value, or mix your own. I always take the opportunity to stick in some of their champagne offers too, currently £25 a bottle for Laurent Perrier (my fave) or Perrier Jouet NV.
I also only drink red, I had an amazing 2004 Rioja recently (but stupidly didn't write down the name), and am also into Spanish Tempranillo as a good everyday drinker.

Brunello di Montalcino. http://www.cinellicolombini.it/english/casato_prim...
have a look at laithwaites mixed cases, more often then not pretty nice selection, not looked recently but would guesst they are offering a few xmas deals, sometimes nice to have a lucky dip approach and just see what turns up and tickles your fancy, reasonable evenings entertainment with friends trying different stuff

It depends what you like.
Personally I'm a Burgundy lover and could quite happily fill the rack with Faiveley 1er Cru, however at £50-odd a bottle that isn't likely.
Fleurie offers a cheaper alternative, also Beaujolais: Georges Duboeuf Chiroubles is around the £8.99 mark from Waitrose (occasionally discounted).
If you like Bordeaux then Berry Bros Good Ordinary Claret is a reliable choice for sub £10.

If a channel hop is an option, then this guy is a star:

I've been heading over once a year for the past 5 or 6 years and I'll get 100 or so bottles each trip. I think he might pay your ferry as well if you spend over a certain amount.
