My oh wants a food mixer proper stylee. She has found a Kenwood Chef Classic Major in Argos for £240, 6.7l bowl and 900 watts. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4...

I have heard good things about the Kitchenaid Artisan, 4.8l bowl and 300 watts?! Direct drive though no gears like the Kenwood, which has plastic gears, and the Kitchenaid is probably quieter, is "prettier" so will look better if left out. I am concerned that the Kenwood is underpowered for the bowl size.

The Kitchenaid sounds better but the cheapest on ebay new is £320. Oh and Nigella has one cloud9

Depends on how often it's used I guess. Our Chef has been going strong for 5 years and is as-new.

I have a KitchenAid. No complaints whatsoever other than I seldom use it and it's a massive expensive kitchen ornament. That's my fault though, the machine is faultless, very pretty for an appliance too biggrin

On looks I'd prefer a KitchenAid but on value I bought a Chef.

I've got the Premier http://www.electricshopping.com/kenwood-kmc560-che... but I bought it from Costco. It comes with a glass liquidiser rather than a plastic one. I bought my accessories (slicer and mincer) from this co though and there service was very good.

Why is she looking at the Major? I would only buy one if a) I had 14 children, b) I was cooking commercially and c) had arms like a gorilla. I couldn't manage the Major bowl, it's huge. She needs to go and see one to get a feel for the size.

I thought the entry level Chefs were a bit cheap and nasty hence buying the Premier. Our John Lewis had a Major an entry level Chef and the Premier together on display so that I could compare all of them.

Price up the accessories as well, I felt that the whole Kitchen Aid package got too pricey for my budget.

Thanks Piglet, we went to Costco and got that model today. If it ever breaks we can take it back as long as we are a Costco member.

I wouldn't bother keeping up your Costco membership just for that smile. We were bought a Kenwood Chef as a wedding present 25 years ago. It's still going strong.

Fortuitous thread actually - I'm currently considering my options on these too. Probably veering towards the Kitchen Aid at the moment, simply because you can't beat a bit of kitchen bling.

It's a good choice of model, it did seem much sturdier than the white entry level models and I also like the peace of mind of buying things from Costco.

Happy baking!

The Comet one does seem identical to the one we just got from Costco, apart from the colour.

My Chef Major has been going strong for 31 years and shows no sign of wearing out yet.

Seems Kenwood have got in on the "kitchen art" thing.
