Gear box noise question.

My Honda Integra R in making a fairly loud noise at tick over.
The noise goes away when I put my foot on the clutch.
So the question is what is it? I'm pretty sure it wasnt there beofore and its pretty loud although not a harsh(as if broken badly) noise.
I posted on the honda tpre r forum and the consensus was its teh clutch release bearing.
But if it was that wouldnt it make the noise when I put my foot on the clutch?

The clutch release bearing is only being used when you foot is on the clutch....so this is NOT the problem...
If it was it would make a noise when you depressed the Clutch pedal.
With the car in neutral and the clutch out the input shaft to the gearbox is rotating at the same speed as the engine....this also connects to the lay shaft which also rotates and the sometime, when gearboxes are hot they chatter as the engine idles...
When you put you foot on the clutch the gearbox shafts stop rotating...hence the noice stops....

Almost correct.
Many clutch release bearings are in constant contact with the clutch fingers - but I don't think the release bearing is the problem.
The problem could be that the dual mass flywheel is not damping correctly and you hear the flywheel chatter, or in the case of a normal flywheel where the clutch disc incorporates springs and a friction damper that the damper is contaminated with oil, or excess grease that came off the splines if the clutch has been replaced for any reason.
I have also known the problem to be able to be found if the transmission is off centre to the crankshaft axis, just from the positional tolerancing of the dowels or the tightening sequence of the transmission. The fix is that with the engine runnign the trans bolts can be slackened and a transmission jack used to move the trans to where there is least noise. With the engine still running and everything in place the bolts are torqued down, hey presto the system is quiet.
Check to see if the noise disappears as the revs rise. It may just be that the damping disc is worn. You can replace with a new clutch disc, if you do see traces of oil in there you will need to fit a new crank seal or input shaft seal as appropriate.
