Opticians? Glasses? Eye Tests? Free??

Getting older and my eyesight is going! I have been using cheap reading glasses for a while but now I think it's time to bite the bullet and get a proper eye test done.

My High Street has them all, Specsavers, Vision Express, D&A, plus others. So any recommendations/comments?

Also finding it hard to get an exact cost on a test, they are all very candid on-line, anyone know of any free offers? (tight git!)

Does your work involve using a computer? If so your employer may (not sure of the specific criteria) be obliged to pay for your eye test - check with your HR people

Boots are generally OK, and worth spending the extra tenner to have the retinal photography to check for any issues.

Having gone through 10+ pairs at Specsavers I'd say avoid them like the plague, I couldn't understand why despite spending a small fortune over many years I always had headaches... one trip to Vision Express and a decent pair of glasses later and it was problem solved. Specsavers are cheap for a reason.

If you use a computer for more than 50% of the working day (may be a slightly different %) your employer is obliged to pay for a bi-annual test.

If you have any family history of Glaucoma (?sp?) then I believe you can have a test done at no cost.

I echo what has been said about Specsavers, they cocked up my glasses and then my contact lenses, but both were differently wrong so I couldn't escape just move the headache. One desperate visit on a sunday to Vision Express as they were the only opticians open and the change was amazing. I had new glasses in an hour, no headache an other hour later and £10 insurance which has cost them two frames and three lenses at £80 each! No problem with contacts either, I didn't pay for 6 months until I was completely comfortable with them.
