550d or 7d & IS for sports or not?

About to order one of these as an upgrade to my 400d. The upgrade is primarily to shoot my kids basketball league in sports halls, flashless. The 400d gets very noisy over 800iso.

So, given that I want it for extra speed in low light is the 7d really going to offer much more to me? I don't need weather sealing, 8fps would be cool but that's about it and the cost difference is a nice lens.

Also, I am getting a 70-200mm 2.8. Given that I am using high shutter speeds (or will once I can dial the iso up) is it worth getting the IS version.....it's a LOT more money for something I'm thinking won't help me?

For moving subjects IS won't help. However, it depends on what other uses the lens would have as to whether it's worth the extra expense to you.

I do alot of football with a f4 IS L but usually the IS is off. It's a very nice thing to have when using it for more static shots.

I'm in the same position, looking to change to a 2.8 but wondering IS or not. Chances are, I'm going without.

Also, never used a 550D but I do shoot with a 7D. Atm, I'm working alot under floodflit conditions. Our ground is pretty good to be fair.

This was shot at 2500iso with a bit of noise reduction. Bearing in mind, it was shot with an f4 so the shutter speed wasn't quite as high as I'd like.



The FPS on the 7 is immensely helpful, but you do have to take time to get the camera set up to your liking. It was certainly a jump up the learning curve for me. I'm just about getting there after a fairly long period of ownership.

The F2.8L IS will help with image blur as it has two settings for IS, one for static and one which detects when you are panning . .. I use it for motorsport and I have to say I haven't tested back to back on and off to compare as in reality it would be so difficult to discount all other factors.

Having upgraded from a F4L 70-200 I wouldn't be without the 2.8IS. Shooting at a very gloomy overcast Oulton Park earlier in the year and I was still able to stop the lens to F4, reasonable shutter speed and maintain lowish ISO . . . It's a great piece of kit. This is with a 1.4TC as well . ..

Can't comment on the bodies i'm afraid, I use a 450D. I'm savings for a 1d Mk111 for my upgrade . ..

Can't get the right side of the fence, I'm only a punter not a pro tog . .

Would love a 400 2.8L, but it's not exactly cheap and I don't earn my living doing it to justify . .

Found a used IS model on ebay at only £150 more than the non IS model used....think i'll go for that. It's not the mark II but I cant see it will matter to what I want from it.

Now to get a 7d sorted!
