Rhythm Riot 2010

I'm covering the Rythmn Riot down at Camber Sands this weekend. It's a 50s/Rockabillly weekend with Hot Rods, live music, burlesque and loads of other stuff going on.

Pictures will follow next week but I'm posting now just through excitement/boasting about some new/hired gear I have for the weekend that I'm very much looking forward to using.

I've finally decided that turning up to a paid gig with just my trusty 120,000 actuation 5D is a bit risky so I've made the move to a MkII which I've just got today. Can't wait to push the ISO and have a play with the video. Just hope I can crash course myself on the differnces tonight before I use it in anger tomorrow.

As there will be lots of night time action taking place I've also tapped up Lens for Hire for a 85mm 1.2 L for the weekend. Very heavy for it's size but sooooo much glass

With this combo I should be able to shoot in the dark

I'll be sharing the results from Sunday onwards.

Always look forward to seeing your shots Nick. Sounds like a great event with much photographic potential!

I'm seriously pondering an 85mm prime for the wedding/portrait stuff that I do. The Canon F1.2 is the "holy grail" but the recently-released Sigma F1.4 looks promising too (and considerbly cheaper). Not that many decent reviews around yet though.

I think it fair to say you've mastered the Mk II then Nick That's some of your best. Difficult to pick favourites but 4, 5 and 7 I particularly like. Thanks for sharing

Thanks Reg, I dared to think this but not say it. Loads more to come.

It was a real challenge but very enjoyable. I started shooting at 10am Saturday and finished at 3am Sunday, with a few meal breaks. My feet, legs and hands were almost locked up by the end. Then I wass back shooting at 10am Sunday.

I really needed two bodies so it was a good job I got the MkII in time. I had one body set up for flash with the 24-105 and the other with the 85. There was very little light available so it was a really good choice of kit in the end I recommend that unless you can afford to buy a 85 1.2 you don't rent one, I have a big want face now. Still not too bad to keep hiring one I suppose.

Cracking set Nick, 013 is the stand out one for me but they're all stunning.

Cracking shots Nick. Really capture the atmosphere and having not been to the event I get the feeling being in 'normal' clothes would make you the odd one out.

They must run this a couple of times a year as we were camping down Ashford way I think it was in June and woke up with quite a few rockabillies in the pitch next door who turned up late in the night.

Yes, my clothes were OKish but by hair was definatley not right, might have to grow it a bit if I do this next year!

There is another event down there called the Rockabilly Rave which is probably the one you are thinking of

I don't think that detracts from the image one bit, tbh while I'd noticed that they were CD's I hadn't even considered that it could be taken as an old image had they been LP's. It's just a stunning photograph.

That thought crossed my mind BUT when you consider that the majority of people 'of that age in that age' (ie late teens to mid 20s) who would spend hours in music emporiums seeking out interesting albums are now sitting at home searching with Google .... well, it's just nice to see something traditional! Such opportunities seem to have disappeared from the highstreets of the nation.

And as its only a couple of miles away we popped over for the cruise into Rye yesterday afternoon, stunning convoy of cars, mine excluded, dont suppose you got any shots of that as well ???????? seeing as how this is PH it would be rude not to have done

Thanks The Cruise was the handover point from me to Neal Reed who is a crackin' photographer, he was covering the rest of the weekend. I shot the cruise leaving site then jumped in my '57 and joined in, then went home from Rye. One of my Facebook friends got loads of shots of the cruise...

Difficult to pick favourites... candid portraits are expressive and full of life...composition has punchy confidence in some shots, yet light and delicate in others...adore the incidental detail shots (stairs, curtain, etc)... processing is impeccable - just the right level, each shot feels like cinematic moment...

As others have said, without doubt some of your best work





The event looks like great fun, would have loved to have been there!
