Someone ought to do an 'old chestnut' smilie...

Anyway, have trawled the threads and can't find one that makes a few recommendations. Here's the deal: Need to give the garage a makeover and put in a durable, good looking floor. Ideally rubber tiles as it will be soft when I'm rolling round on it swearing at a Haynes manual. However, needs to be strong enough for axle stands and jacking etc (although would probably get anal and put something down first anyway). Therefore, paint is out, as are ceramic tiles.

Budget wise, I'd hoped it would be a couple of hundred quid for a double garage. I feel I could be disappointed. If it's going to be twice that, I can handle it. Much more than that and I'll feel compelled to lay a nice wool berber just on price principal. Google hasn't really made me much wiser.

What's the popular choice here? Photos would be nice too! smile

And are these eBay ones a total waste of time? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/128-Sq-Ft-Cushioned-Floor-Ti...

Thanks!

A friend of mine has these tiles on a 1/4 of his workshop floor (1/4 is office, 1/2 is machine tools) and they've probably been down 2 years and have worked very well. So I guess that's a thumbsup for general toughness, though not in a garage setting, they're set out between the warehouse door, to the office, and round where he has his electronics bench and engraving machine.

Haven't received yet but at that price got to be worth a gamble. Not going to see Till Xmas so can't feed back sorry. Good luck

I've recommended this before, but we used PAF tiles for our garage and they work a dream - easy to clean, easy to lay (and make your own design) and more comfortable to lie on. You can find them at PAF Systems

Here's our finished floor:

It costs about £25 per sq m.

I've been looking for low cost ideas for mine and those look good to me.

Previously I'd looked at foam tiles - apparently will disintegrate after you drive over them a few times - and second hand carpet tiles - don't think they'd stand up well to moisture or oil spills.

Will be watching this thread with interest. Might just bite the bullet and seal and paint the floor next summer.

lotuselan7 - I think you owe it to the rest of the PistonHeads community to get on with it and give us a report pronto! smile

sdmurray - Thanks, I'd seen your pic before (very nice) and have come across PAF in my Google search. Annoying that they don't have pricing online! From what you are saying (£25/sqm), I'd be looking at >£700 for the minimum 28.5sqm my garage covers. Sadly, with lots of other expenditute going on, it's a bit rich for me.

However, your stripes have led to a brainwave. The cheapo tiles will be fine for rolling around and being 10mm and soft, nice to walk on. But I could also lay four PAF tile 'stripes' where the cars wheels will run and stand. At 500mm wide, they will more than cover the area used by the various cars that will be in the garage. I reckon that I'll need no more than 8 metres - £200, plus about £150 of the softer easimat tiles = job done £350.

Anyone like my thinking? Any more suggestions on tiles? Looking forward to being able to post some before and after pics up! Thanks all.

The idea of doing the stripes of PAF sounds good in theory, but would the other tiles be strong enough should you need to jack something up that doesn't happen to be above the strips?

It's a good point, but I'd be happy enough to keep a piece of 'jacking ply' to stick under it for that purpose. Same with axle stands.

The top of the range PVC garage floor tiles are outside your budget unfortunately OP but just for info. anybody who wants the best available then I would go to GaragePride here garage floor tiles

These are 500mm tiles so lay very quickly and easily. They are 7mm thick, look great and are capable of withstanding any treatment dished out to them in a garage.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of another garden shed because you won't want to put all that dusty old crap you've acquired back in your pristine garage ....

Actually it's the cost of kitchen cabinets to hide all the junk - and the electricty meter! Fortunately, have a shed to and some stuff may well be demoted out there.

I have those ones in the workshop at the back of my garage.

They are very soft & that can be a bad thing, if you drop a screw or nail on the floor they're easily trod in & thus I have several holes in mine now after 2 years.

I'm looking out for something more substantial like I have in the garage.

I got them off ebay but they sell them at Costco apparently.

Hmm, that's interesting. They look like plastic rather than 'rubber'. Stong enough to jack on? Annoyingly, Costco doesn't show products on their website, so I have no idea how to find out the cost!

Those GaragePride ones look remarkably like Ecotile (which is what I have, from versatileflooring.co.uk), but are a bit more expensive... As a previous poster said, it's worth calling a couple of these companies to see if they have any end of line stock. I knocked about 25% off the cost of my floor by doing that.

Funny, I thought the same after someone I know told me all about the Ecotile tiles. Will have to do some shopping around, but I think the budget has been forced upwards. Ah well, buy once, buy right, and all that.

Ta - seen your pics before, nice work! Found a useful review of the Costco/Racedeck tiles which are similar to dynotiles as well - puncturing the floor and noise being a couple of issues. I can see the issue with puncturing and from experience of rasied plastics floors in racing, a misplaced load and crack them too. I could live with that, it's the clattering they make when you walk about that would bother me! This is especially so on my flat, but not billard smooth, concrete floor, where they wouldn't be perfectly flat.

It's looking like PAF tektiles (pvc) at the moment and biting the bullet on the cost. One colour or chequered, hmmm...

I've been looking at these too. There are two big garages at my dads house, one we use as a workshop, the other as a garage. I wanted to lay some nice looking coloured tiles like the ones pictured but it was looking to be very expensive. The garage is quite large (10.5 x 6 metres) so at £30 per sq. metre is was going to be over £1,700!! The costco ones look ok and affordable though.
