I'm not a Nikon user but my thoughts are that if you're finding yourself struggling to get enough light indoors, then a bounce head flashgun is probably the best value and most versatile solution. Presumably if you're considering a flashgun, then you've got that problem or you've got another particular purpose in mind.
As to which one to get, I've got the Canon equivalent of the SB-600, and whilst it is perfectly good and a million times better than not having a flashgun, I'd say that if you can afford it, go for the most powerful flashgun they do. There will be times when you want the extra power.

Any would do.
400 lights stuff up.
600 lights a bit more stuff up and the lowest-numbered of SB-x00 range that can be triggered using Nikon's CLS wireless system. Not amazing build quality/ susceptible to failure after seemingly insignificant knocks.
800 is only available used but remains sought after. Prices have stabilised since folk got over their fear of the...
...900 which is considerably bigger than the 800 and was reported as prone to overheating in its early days. Powerful, mind.
700 is the newcomer, not had any experience yet.

How you mean? I generally trigger mine using PW's, so interoperability isnt really a consideration eta Would love to come out on a shoot Andy, let me know

Ah, wasnt on about triggering it with another flash, meant that it dosent work when connected by the hot shoe. Thought it should but I cant get it to go. Probaly being a thicky!
I've got 2 SB900's, love the interface and power, but I have had problems with overheating - at a shoot in Japan last month, it was about 25C ambient and I wasn't getting more than 50 shots out before they'd overheat.
guess it depends if you're planning on doing any commercial stuff where time is a big issue!
