Nikon Remote Control vs Other Brands

Just a quickie. I want a remote release for my D5000. None of the options are very expensive at all (the official Nikon one is only £8 or so) but just wondered if there is a reason to avoid the really cheap ones? Maybe naively, I'm assuming they're all just a lump of plastic with a button.
They are "just a lump of plastic with a button", so they should all do the same thing. Having said that, I bought a cheapo one from eBay for a Canon camera and it managed not to work. I don't know if that anecdote is in any way representative of your likely experience, but for £8 I'd get the Nikon one.

Cheers, feel like a right tight git quibbling over £8 but there are a few goodies I fancy and it all adds up. That said, I am leaning towards the Nikon. It just seems the right thing to do!Nice pre-Christmas thread! Am hoping for one of those (the Nikon one) plus a cheapo tripod plus a lens cleaner / blower thingy in my stocking. Like you say, it all adds up. Got a really good deal on the camera a few months ago, but already spent another £200 on a Sigma lens and Lowepro bag since then...

Oh, I'm right in that boat. I'd not really appreciated before that the camera really is just one smallish part of an overall spend that really doesn't seem to have an end point

It's worth it just to avoid having 'Chung-Pingyo' printed on your kit. Think of the shame... every time you use it you'll just feel cheap and plasticky...Edited by Simpo Two on Friday 12th November 18:04

Ah, the infra-red remote.
I sort of assumed that the OP was thinking of a wired remote - at the price.
A option would be one of the many radio frequency wireless options out in the wild. Usually somewhat more than £8 though.
Does the IR remote allow the use of bulb mode? Asking because I have no idea but seem to recall that being a shortcoming on other (non-Nikon) IR remotes I have seen.

I don't think so but suspect the shutter speed goes up to 30s which is long enough for almost everything except star trails.Edited by Simpo Two on Friday 12th November 20:36

Yesterday I was looking at the same sort of things but for Canon. So familiarity with the ball park prices, though Canon tend to be a little more for branded options, strongly suggested that an £8 asking price was going to be for a wired solution especially when one considers the mention of avoiding 'cheaper' versions. I just didn't recall seeing spotting any sort of remote that was not wired at under £8 other than an eBay auction with plenty of time to run.
"Lump of plastic with a button", or words to that effect, also seemed to lean towards something relatively unsophisticated although I suppose the finer points of IR technology might not be fully appreciated in a modern world full of remote controls.

I don't think I really appreciated that this being infra red would be a little angle sensitive. For those that have tried both this and a wired remote, would appreciate your feedback on whether infra red has it's limitations. I mainly want it to remove shutter shake when pressing the shutter for long exposures but I dare say I may use it for group shots and maybe the odd stealthy wild life shots.
It seems that either I got the price wrong for the Nikon Remote or it was reduced and has gone back up. Can't find it for less than £12 anywhere.
