So, Nottingham Council paid £1.05 million for street lighting in 2005.

Bill is now £5 million.

They are sugeesting turning some off to save £1.25 per year.

They estimate the cost of planning and implementing this reduction will be £3.2 million.

roflroflrofl

Private consultants must be lighting their Cohiba's with £50 notes up and down the country if councils pay £3 million to plan and implements target switching off and dimming of lights.

This is nearly as crazy as Leeds council spending £100 million replacing 'aging' streetlights.

No wonder we are fvcked.

Couldn't they just get some of the locally armed youths to shoot them out, would be cheaper and they would have something to do in the evenings.

Meetings, consultants, more meetings, fact finding missions, few more meetings, some meetings and a bloke to come empty your dustbin once every two weeks

You forgot the diversity co-ordinators, ensuring that they don't call it a black-out, and that all of the streetlights were taken out in a halal manner...

I was only half watching whilst doing something else and therefore convinced myself that I did not hear correctly. Are you sure this is the correct figure for something that should be as simple as flicking a switch.

Let's not forget that they hire large numbers of people who couldn't hold down a proper job.

The real problem is that they didn't keep track of who they were and so many have now been promoted to run the show.

Did they fund a focus group meeting led by a cross-party approved chairperson in order to set up a committee that ultimately declares a new initiative for spending £45million pounds changing the colour of the fking street lights to make for a more pleasant lighting experience at 4.00am in the morning ?

45 million - that’s one more reason why this country has been screwed beyond recognition.

Back then, in 2007, under the wonderful nuLab , local councils switching off street lights in Devon and elsewhere was hailed by the BBC as a social experiment to be lauded, an essential part of the green crusade. It saved tons of that vile substance called carbon, don't you know? Now, according to Newsnight, tonight, it's part of the nasty cuts agenda. Snuffing those carbon-intensive sources of illumination was transformed into an issue of "fear" sometime after the general election. Funny, that. Not sure yet how Matt Prodger is going to handle the subject on Newsnight, but I can guess.

I know the source is biased, but I was thinking the exact same thing when listening to this last night.

Couldn't they just replace the bulbs with more energy efficient ones?

Edit: I just looked it up and yes, they could.

It seems the HPS lights they use consume about 160w of energy and a comparable LED bulb would use just 100w and not need changing for 10 years.

They should just wait until their electricity company sends them out for free.

Don't forget Xboxes and Wii Fits. A council I know who knew if they didn't spend their full budget they would get a reduction the following year. So they spent what they had left on stupid wasteful projects and toys for the office.

This is Nottingham City council we're talking about here. If there's one area in which they excel, it's that off pissing money up the wall for no benefit to anyone but themselves and cronies mad

If they give me £200K I will single handedly orchestrate the whole thing and in half the time.
